Agro bank has been historically strapped for funds.

Santo Domingo.- The Administrator of the agro loan bank today told the opposition PRD party’s presidential candidate that the Law doesn’t  authorize forgiving debts with the Banco Agricola (Bagricola), in response to Hipólito Mejía’s recent statements.

Paíno Abreu Colollado said “a President could look for funds where he considers pertinent, as president Leonel did Fernandez did when he paid more than RD$30.0 million to Bagricola bank to settle debts they lost in their areas of production in the Enriquillo Lake region, but not speak of forgiving, because that figure doesn’t exist in this Bank’s regulations.”

Last weekend Mejía pledged to condone the onion growers’ debt with the agro bank, but Abreu noted that the political demagoguery shouldn’t lead to formulation of non-viable promises which in the official’s view also pose a threat to the Dominican financial system. “By expressing himself in such an irresponsible manner, the candidate Mejía should keep in mind that in his term in office (2000-2004), history’s worse banking failures occurred and from which the country has yet to fully recover.”

Abreu, in a statement quoted by newspaper Hoy, also cited the scandal sparked by Mejia’s previous statements in the same topic and when Bagricola’s clients didn’t pay any attention to his similar exhortations that borrowers abstain from paying their debts. “The national producers know they have the effective support of this Government agency, whose primary target is to economically support farming development.”

history’s worse banking failures = Yes that is correct. Brought on by our Queen and passed on with all the other debts and failures she caused and now she has her husband running for VP.

And this is what some people want as their president???? Yes a good way to try to buy votes without it costing anything but just imagine the view international lenders, IMF etc. will take from this. If Hippo is elected no one will lend the D.R. any more funds as they will know he has no intention of paying anything back.

The banks need to be firm and conservative in their banking policies. Otherwise, there will be a collapse of the system of such a magnitude the government would not have its own reserves to bail them out in a manner as the US did with the bailout of its banks and industry with the 800 billion stimulas program.

Hipolito's policies to forgive debt goes against a rational administration of banking procedure. If implemented should Mejia acquire the throne, expect double digit inflation figures and an economy in complete chaos. There would not be enough pesos in print to pay the botellas.

If the government wants to make a gift, grant or subsidy then call it that. "Forgiving" loans is crazy and erodes confidence in the banking system. Next thing the bank will be passing on "forgiveness" to it's investors? "Sorry, guys, you've done your deposit stock, but console yourselves in the knowledge the farmers are laughing all the way from the bank".
Can I get "forgiveness" on my housing or car loan?
How about advertising special "forgiveness" loans?
Are they taking business away from the Catholic Church?
Has the government applied for a "forgiveness" loan from the IMF?
