Santo Domingo.- The Cabarete Development Association (ADECA) on Monday announced it will file charges this week against Cabarete mayor Gabriel Antonio Mora, and seek two years in prison for allegedly violating the Free Access to Public Information Law.
It said Puerto Plata Instruction Court presiding judge Jakaira Veras ruled to grant ADECA a restraining order against Mora (Canoa) on January 5, after the Puerto Plata 1st Civil Chamber had already convicted the official and ordered him to hand over the public information requested, in April last year.
According to ADECA’s lawyer Victor Mena Graveley and ADECA interim president Michel Gay-Crosier, the charges against Mora stem from his refusal to render accounts for the fiscal year and City Hall bank accounts, in addition to failing to reveal bookkeeping procedures.

Really the things some people want is incredible ,,the mayor has said what is the use of having that silly law when he was elected to govern the town, If some one wants that type of information then he had best be elected mayor himself ,

While they are at it why don't file charges against Lie-onel Fernandez who the whole world knows has violated the Dominican constitution for 8 years by not funding EDUCATION with legally mandate 4%?

Go for it, ADECA! Let's establish a precedent in convicting a govt official.
Antonio Mora, clearly in violation of a judicial ruling is, most likely, hiding theft and procedural irregularities in his tenure.
Let's throw his ass in jail and confiscate his assets! This could be a harbinger for what's to come, with govt officials made to come clean, in dealing with public funds.
It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Of course most of the mayors , including this one are from the PRD ,after they did very well in council elections last time but so poorly in the national government ..so of course .the mal administraion is blind to what colour an elected politician may wear .

According to the Merchant's association, the man stole, sometimes at gunpoint, over RD$250MM since he's been in power.
That's why they want to see the books.
They've grown tired of seeing the crooks.

ViVE LA ADECA, great job guys
Canoa is a corrupt gangster who rules Cabarete in wild west manner, stealing money from every touristic development which tries to establish a buisiness. The buildng sector is practically stopped in Cabarete because of this.
The man should receive what he deserves. This could be a precedent case for all DR corrupt polititians. As it seems we shouldn't give up the hope in this country.

I am surprised Roy has not made a positive statement yet.
What is he waiting for?

Poncaal, Canoa doesn't keep the money ion his pockets - they aren't big enough. He carries a briefcase! The guy's a major league thief. Guess why the major of a town the size of Cabarete would spend up to RD$16,000,000 to win an election??

Canoa was put in charge through PLD because he paid big money for it. PLD senator Francis Vargas of Puerto Plata can tell you exactly how much and to whom he paid. Canoa is a criminal who runs around with a gun in his back pocket. Supposedly this impresses his opponents but not the people from ADECA and their lawyers. These people are on their way make history.
At the other hand Canoa is just a simple guy who is trying to cash now what he has invested a while ago in this business. Guys this is just like any other business, you invest, you work, you cash. This is what Canoa understands and now a bunch of investors want to make the life hard for him just because he is doing his business. This is how Mafia works, Cabarete Mafia

My understanding is that there's a large number of expats living and working in the north coast. Some even have businesses there.
We should all band together and form a political coalition of resident- foreigners which would include honest Dominicans whose wish is to stop corruption and criminal activity sanctioned by the present govt.
We're all glad ADECA is trying to accomplish just that, but a large union of civilized people will undoubtedly help, big-time, in ousting A-holes, like Canoa.

ok when the case is complete if we get convict what is a fare sentence?? also how many charges are there??
From: Dominican Republic
No matter what is a fair sentence, if Canoa gets convicted of going to jail even for a couple of weeks it would definitely end his career as a politician and make other corrupt politicians think twice before stealing.
