SANTIAGO.- The journalist Marcos Martinez on Friday harshened his allegation that first lady Margarita Cedeño has €43 million account in a Danish bank by stating that if fact, the amount is 76 million Euros, and acknowledged her right to file slander charges against him.

“She’s the First Lady and is obliged to strongly clarify to the Dominican electorate my denunciation’s veracity or lack thereof, because she’s the vice presidential candidate and she’s placed under the scrutiny of public opinion and of the voters whom she seeks the support from,” Martinez said after ending his program in a local channel in Santiago.

He challenged Cedeño to present documents to debunk his assertion because in his view, she’s not exempt from questioning. “I am not going to feel fear, we’re in a State of Law and I don’t campaign for money either.”

Martinez advised the First Lady to send an emissary to the Danish bank and obtain a certification that she has nothing to do with that account “and, if so, we wouldn’t have to go to any trial because I’ll immediately condemn myself.”

Since the first lady and her notorious husband did not have 100 pesos between them prior to being elected it comes to stand that their money was collected after being elected.

If this is the case then where did the money come from?

If she has that kind of money, it is obvious that it has been ill-gotten and has a lot of explaining to do. I sincerely wish this issue comes up to surface before the elections.
She and hubby could be prosecuted by an international court of law and made to make restitution to our people.
If this happens, other big fish are in line for severe consequences.

Very hard to think IF THIS IS SO that shell companies and other forms of plausible deniability were not used. And the people setting up such a scheme would be VERY much rookies in the financial ways of the world to place such enormous amounts into named accounts.

Too risky and perhaps there is ANOTHER WOMAN so named, there are I suspect many Margarita Cedeños in this world. Cedeño is not that unknown of a surname and Margarita even less, so let's see the evidence before we jump the gun.

Many could care less about the fact she might have misused her influence to gain monies, and as a matter of fact, would probably want to get closer to her, since now they know she is wealthy, and they might get some of that wealth from her.

Mob rule and reasoning.

If the man has proof then let him state it and it will be judged on the merits.

And josean, in legal terms, people have 'Ei incumbit probatio qui dicit, non qui negat,' the presumption of innocence.

-A principle, mind you, that requires the government to prove the guilt of a criminal defendant and relieves the defendant of any burden to prove his or her innocence.

But you knew that.

Ricardolito and Atabey,

Well, we can start by making some very simple (and wrong) assumptions, the case will depend voluminous upon on whom presides over court proceedings and the legal representation of both parties. Although the innermore that determines the outcome of many defamation law cases will depend upon the strength and admissibility of evidence -- including physical proof, cyber data , and documentary.

And last but not least, the case will most likely go international, because the banking system might have to get involved as an evidence provider.

But please, do not take my words too literally, because I do not engaged in the practice of law.

If the allegations are bogus all the first lady has to do is go to Denmark with a group of respected Dominican and international journalists like Alicia Ortega, Nuria Piera and CNN. Then go to the bank with the documents and checks that have been presented as proof of this questionable account and ask the bank to authenticate them or disqualify them. This can be done in couple of days and the she would be in a stronger position to sue Mr. Martinez.

Not to mention that it would strengthen her and Danilo’s candidacy! This is not rocket science nor does it require the superior intellect of Atabey; belter known as Mickey Mouse!

Martinez, it's time to put up or shut up.
If she has embezzled money from the state then she should be tried and if found guilty, convicted. However she has no obligation to defend herself until then. If Martinez has proof, then he needs to present it.
However I doubt the Dominican judiciary has the balls to do it, even if presented with irrefutable evidence. Stealing from the state is a Dominican birthright - to the best of one's ability - whether you are the President. 1st lady, government official, or a peasant attaching wires to transmission-lines, or stealing man-hole covers, or bribing an official for a drivers license.

You see Roy I agree with you that a private citizen has no obligation.

However, when you’re the first lady with and extraordinary budget at your disposal as a non-elected government official and when you are using your reputation as qualification to run for the vice Presidency you are held to higher scrutiny.

The publics assumes that politicians ,which she is, and a very prominent one at that, because of her marriage and the candidacy see is involved in, are guilty until proven guilty. It should not be that way but that is the environment politicians have created for themselves, especially in DR with their almost genetic propensity to steal.

It’s like pedophilia not all priest are child molesters, even you would concede that, but unfortunately because the way the Catholic Church has handled or mishandled these crimes to a very large segment of society ALL priests are suspect.

Pepe Goiko,I have heard his names a thousand times, and all know he kills and steals, but he's high up on the Hippoponamus bandwagon. I was in court last week, a father beat the crap out of his 19 year old son, The father said his son stole money from the him, but the money was in a bank account with only the 19 year old's name on it. He said it was a gift from his dad, that was why it was in his account. The judge totally ignored the busted up face of the kid,the disfigured nose, that he beat the s**t out of his own son, and said since the kid admitted the father had given him the money it must be returned, This is a Disneyworld for the criminals

had this been the USA, the FBI would have been called in to investigate the veracity of the allegations, and, if proven true, there would be congressional hearings to decide how to proceed. sadly, neither of those options is available here. there is no parallel to the FBI here...no investigative body which can be expected to function independently of the government, principally the Chief Executive, whose own wife is the center of the attentions. secondly, the hearings would be a circus act, since the entire senate is made up of PLD representatives. so, what we have is the subject of amusement, banter, gossip and innuendo. it will all come to naught. the only benefit is that it has surely put paid to any chance Danilo has of winning the Presidency. even that is a mixed blessing, in that it ostensibly hands the keys of the Presidential Palace to Mejia. comedic goings -on in tropical banana republics.

"Margarita Gate: why has influential Senator Felix Bautista kept silence?"

"The powerful leader was mentioned by Marcos Martinez as one of the people involved in allegedly receiving money form the account that is attributed to the first lady."

"SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic.-Contrary to the first Lady Margarita Cedeño de Fernández, who addressed accusations by defending herself in a video that with regard to allegations she has an account with more than 43 million euros in a bank in Denmark, Senator Felix Bautista, who also linked to this case, has remained silent in his own defense."

"Marcos Martínez, the lawyer and commentator from Santiago, said that Felix Bautistad was a recipient of a transfer of money in connection with the alleged account of the first lady, through a NGO called Fundi, which is the private foundation of Senator and high official of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD)."

I would venture to guess that if Margarita actually has all that money, it was not funneled by her own devices, alone. She must have had a lot of help from the pros.
Somehow, this garbage bobbed to the surface. What went wrong?

On the other hand, Marcos Martinez, must have had some kind of insider information. How did he get it, and who gave it to him?
This man doesn't seem to be a dummy and is totally standing by his allegations. If he doesn't end up floating in the Ozama, and is able to prove it without a doubt; the repercussions are enormous! This will change the course of history in our country and establish a precedent that wiil reverberate for many years to come!
