Héctor Timerman, Leonel Fernandez
Santo Domingo.- Argentina Foreign Relations minister Héctor Timerman said his country won’t use troops to solve the century-old dispute with Great Britain over the Falklands Islands, during a meeting with president Leonel Fernandez , who stated Dominican Republic’s support to the South American nation.
Dominican par Carlos Morales, who also took part in the meeting, reiterated his country’s "firm support” for Argentina.
Timerman said his country hasn’t thought about a military solution, an instead will solve the standoff with Latin America’s support.
Timerman affirmed that Argentina will reclaim the islands it calls Malvinas peacefully, for which it has made several offers of dialogue to Great Britain, but noted that London hasn’t responded.
“Argentina is very proud of Dominican Republic’s support, we’ve just spoken on it with president Leonel Fernandez, who has said the historical support is now and will be in the future. This is an issue of colonialism and colonialism of the 19th century cannot continue in effect into the 21st century. We depart with the satisfaction to see the Dominican Republic once again working against colonialism, and for Latin America’s unity,” the official said.

It is not strange that a lame duck president will back a claim by Argentina, as part of reciprosity with the Argentinian nation, more so since they are reneging military solutions.

I would like to know Leo's reasoning. No doubt the British Embassy would too.
I really don't believe Argentina has any real designs on the Falkland Islands. I think it is just maneuvering to strike a good deal with Britain over the off-shore oil.

Was the issue of Dominican support for Argentina's claim for the Falkland Islands debated in Congress before the President stated his position?

Everybody needs to understand that we are Latin Americans and we need to support each other. Good for DR on supporting Argentina on this issue.
From: Dominican Republic, vieja Santo Domingo
Roll on the election so LF can be stood down ,,he has built up the infrastructure in the DR , more than any other President but what a mess he makes of other things ,,with a foreign service that should be reduced by more than 50 % , The Argentine have no legitimate claim over the Falklnads it has never had Argentinians on the island and the small number of French and Spanish deserted the island and the english were the first to set foot on the island and have administered it for more than 100 years .. Soon we will have LF wanting Puerto Rico because it is close to the DR and why should the USA be there .
The Argentininians who consider themselves above the rest of Latin America have an economy in a dreadful mess and are hopeful of getting some cut in the oil production that will start operations in about 4 or 5 years ..

Argentina's main motive is not even the oil, is to ramp up the patriotism of its people since the government is doing so poorly and they too are in election year and simply want to hide the real issues and bring this up now again.
It shows how easily our DR leaders are used. UNBELIEVABLE!
Argentina doesn't do anything for the DR... they don't invest much (if at all) in DR, and there is no economic aid.. number of tourist from Argentina has also dropped dramatically after they got hit by recessions... at least Taiwan throws a bunch of $$$s to DR, I could see why we support their causes.
DR, come on, get real

Look, this is a very simple solution. An agreement exists between the UK and Argentina, that although the Falklands are managed by the UK, that Argentinians have the right to settle it and thus allowed entry. UK, will recognize the Falklands as UK as long as its citizens continue to vote that their are British. Last time there was a vote like 99% selected to stay Brits.
Argentina, given the fact that they have an open door to the Falklands to settle, how about doing just that? Settle it, start communities there, and then, on the next vote, your settlers could help you get the majority of the votes.
I don't have a problem with Argentinians, I have friends from there and I like them very much. But their government is going about it the wrong way.
DR lost Mona Island to Puerto Rico because we simply ignored it when we became a country. Argentina did the same with the Falklands.

@PuntacanaMike,
Well, I have gone to Punta Cana every year Summer since 2000. I used to bump into many Argentinians all the time. They were simply everywhere in Punta Cana, then starting into 2005 or 2006, I literally stopped seeing them as often, and in some years have not seen any at all.
Maybe I am wrong, and I guess that since you working on the Hotel industry, you have a closer look. Maybe they are going in a different season than the Dominican Summer time which is Winter in South America (which is when you expect them to be there more I guess). If I am wrong with the numbers, then I stand corrected, though I still think they could resolve this Malvinas/Falkland problem by simply settling their people there as they are allowed, so that eventually they have a winning vote and that this whole thing is about a political fiasco in their attempt to hide how poorly the country is doing.
