Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernandez yesterday unveiled the Colonial Zone's Padre Billini hospital, rebuilt at a cost of US$15.0 million and noted that the work will benefit the health of thousands of people from greater Santo Domingo and different parts of the country.
“We’ve been advancing in what has been a deep structural reform of Dominican Republic’s health sector in which has benefitted, mostly the poorest of the country,” the chief executive said.
Public Health minister Bautista Rojas thanked Fernandez for making the hospital’s reconstruction possible. “You score a new victory in the topic of health, like when you provided the most modern hemo-dialysis unit to hundreds of renal patients in the country.”
Present in the ribbon cutting were the first lady Margarita Cedeño, cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez and hospital director Rafael Marte, among others.

The work has been going on for several years now but there is a great problem for as far as I can see, there is no parking for the medical staff, the hospital staff, for patients or for visitors ,,In fact the hospital is on the corner of Arzobipo Nouel and Santome and all the streets are packed early with cars and the only car park nearby is in Jose Reyes and is full often ..There is no planning ,,and how can ambulances get to the front door ...It is just very annoying when a very important project has no proper planning ...Everyone knows that the biggest problem in Zona colonial is parking ..so why not plan the parking with the project ...

Ricardolito,
This is the Dominican way, because of this more money can be diverted to the private pockets of the elected officials.

The Catholic Church has hindered bio-medical research through out it's entire history. It prohibited dissection of dead bodies and persecuted scientists through the Dark Ages, and now campaigns against embryonic stem-cell research today.
It also bans abortion, even to save a mother's life, and the use of condoms even in AIDS-devastated Haiti and Africa. It even condones the murder of abortion surgeons.
It also discourages timely medical intervention in cancer cases by the promotion of saint-worship in the vain hope of miracle cures.
It also prolongs suffering of the terminally ill by banning voluntary euthanasia and medically-assisted suicide.

I would rather return to the subject of the remodelling of this hospital ..I have no qualms about the Archbishop being present as the hospital is probably full of catholics ...My concern is the overall planning and I have a smilar concern with the junction of the two metros where there is no proper planning for a transfer to buses

"SANTO DOMINGO.- The rector of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), Mateo Aquino Febrillet, confirmed yesterday that they are studying the possibility of using the recently inaugurated parking garage to give classes, provisionally, in the upcoming semester that begins next 15 August.
The measure would relocate students that take classes in the faculties of Engineering and Judicial Sciences, whose old buildings are under reconstruction by the Supervising Office of State Projects (OISOE).
Aquino Febrillet said during a phone call to the Diario Libre that before deciding with regard to the parking lot, they will see if they can lease some classrooms, but in case they cannot find any, they will opt to use the garage for classrooms.
The parking garage of the UASD was inaugurated last 31 May, at a cost of RD$1.0 billion, which was the subject of harsh criticisms by different sectors of society".

Ricky, the cardinal's presence at the opening of a medical facility is an insult to the medical profession, especially bio-medical scientists. The fact many patients are Catholics is no excuse.
Considering the number of patients treated for gunshot injuries, perhaps a representative of the pro-gun lobby should have been there too? Maybe a drug baron for the drug-addicts? How about the CEO of Presidente for all the alcohol-poisoning cases? While we're at it, put Dracula in charge of the blood-bank.

Roy you seem to have such a hang up about people having a religion that you are writing childish nonsense..Like it or not the RC church is the official church in this country just as the church of England is in England ,,and so the Cardinal has a right to be there,,,I know you do not like it or anything else about the DR so why hang around and why do we have to hear the same anti catholic views ad nauseum .
For many patients in hospitals they welcome a few minutes with their church representative and on forms here as in Australia and in the UK you are asked if you have any objection to a pastor visiting you ,,Having spent months in hospitals I think hospital padres or pastors do a wonderful job in comforting and encouraging

Ricky, believe whatever superstition you like, but no government should have, support or fund any official or unofficial church. The atrocities of the Catholic Church are not limited to this county, they are in every country that they have deluded congregations. They take millions in every country and unlike other multinational corporations, are exempt from taxation. Imagine how much hospital funding is lost due to that fact. Reminding the sick and dying of the prospect of eternity in hell is the lowest of the low in my view. If the cardinal is doing the good work of the Almighty, he does not need you to defend him. I should have been struck by lightning long ago.
Speaking of lightning, why does the spire of the Higuey cathedral need a lightning-rod?

curios1, beneficial to whom, and how?
I do not doubt that some members of the clergy are genuine, caring people. Such people would be humanitarians with or without the church. However the Catholic Church itself has a hidden agenda. If it cared about the sick an the suffering, it would abandon its inhumane dogma.
I admit there are times when I've been recovering in hospital and it's as boring as hell, and I'd appreciate anyone to talk to, a priest or even the devil himself.

curios do not worry this man is sick if he opposes the work of church pastors and clergy ..comforting the sick ,,and there are no threats given or no harsh words ,,normally quiet words and a prayer ..
Roy You seem to be on a crusade against anything any church does,,whether or not it is good work ,,No one worries that you are a non believer so why not leave those in peace who have a faith .
