Santo Domingo.- The Interior and Police Ministry on Friday incinerated 3.1 million pieces of fireworks, of the 5.3 million seized from various businesses nationwide during yearend festivities.

The large amount of firecrackers, roman candles and bottle rockets confiscated by the Ministry’s Fireworks Control Department (TOP) forced to realize two incinerations, the first on January 20, with 2.2 million units torched, said its director Jose Ramon Fadul in a statement.

The fireworks, worth millions of pesos, were seized in streets and businesses, despite the ban on their uncontroled sale.

Looks that way, anthonyC,
When I was a kid in Australia, Guy Fawkes Night (5 November) was bigger than Christmas for us kids. Then they banned the sale of bangers. Then they banned skyrockets. Then they banned roman candles, etc. Now you can't buy any fireworks, all because some idiots injured themselves.

Correct me if I am wrong but you are saying that you can no longer buy fireworks legally anywhere in DR?

ZonaApache,
they used to burn-off huge piles of confiscated marijuana in USA, but the crowds that gathered down-wind became uncontrollable.

It would seem obvious that if the system can enforce the law and confiscate all these fireworks that they can do the same with the litter. Since everyone is so chuffed at this accomplishment with the contraband, DO THE SAME WITH THE LITTER BUGS!!!

Over and over again I tell my Canadian friends how great DR is and they say 'yeah but when you leave the resort the garbage jumps out at you from everywhere"....

Come on, FedericoD,
are you suggesting the authorities confiscate Dominican litter?
I don't think any Dominican would resist, unless he has to pay for it.
Duping rubbish anywhere is a god-given right, and an outward demonstration of prosperity and modernity. Cleaning it up is the government's responsibility.

Tell your friends not to leave the resorts - the garbage is only one of the hazards.
