Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s Navy has confirmed that the number of deaths in the sinking of a makeshift (yola) boat in Samana Bay has now reached 18, with 13 undocumented travelers rescued alive, some of which were taken to the hospital at Sabana de la Mar for medical attention.

Navy PR director Jose David Porcino made the announcement in a press conference Monday morning, and revealed that Navy Chief of Staff, admiral Nicolas Cabrera ordered an intense search, which include the US Coastguard cuter Capella and patrol boat Regulus.

“We also have five private boats in the search with people who know the area  of the disaster well, also Air Force units and special support from the Naval Auxiliaries, with planes and boats,” the official said.

When asked about the arrests in the tragedy, Porcino said Naval Intelligence is handling the case, adding that Cabrera also disposed of assistance for the first responders. “The Navy is immediately deploying medics to help Public Health personnel given the high number of victims. Cabrera also ordered a wider effort to rescue any remaining survivors.”

“We’ve yet to determine the exact number of people on the boat, since the survivors provide contractive figures. We expect more survivors since the Barracote and Yuna rivers have thick vegetation at their mouths.”

He said one of the fatal victims was pregnant and that at least 16 of the travelers are from San Francisco de Macoris, where according to CDN TV, many of the relatives blame the Navy for “negligence” in the tragedy.

C'mon DT, don't leave us hanging with that last line. It leads to speculation. Exactly how are they saying the Navy was negligent? If you're reporting, then report the full story. If you're cutting and pasting, then paste the link.

@Brien

They're saying the Navy was negligent because it always has to be somebody else's fault.
Of course, Navy officers put the suicidal victims on the boat.

Exactly the same as people that choose to live on the river banks, only to blame the government when there is a flood..

WalterPolo is spot on with his comment. I was under the impression that the vessel departed from Nagua as reported by other media articles. If so, why are they rescuing folks in Samana Bay? Lots of confusing reports. All said, the only fault falls on those who put their own lives in danger by boarding unsafe vessels, while attempting to make illegal voyage to PR. Most of these folks are not educated and very gullible. Who's fault is that? There is plenty of blame to go around. Immediate family members also share blame placing their loved ones on a no-win, one-way trip, with hopes of big benefits (easy money & perhaps future illegal immigration documents). God protect those that don't know any better.

Brien, DT quotes CDN TV for the "negligent" comment.

“Rather than poverty, people leave in boats (yolas) because of despair”

“The Dominicans men and women who risk their lives to try to reach Puerto Rico and US in “yola” are not the poorest. They pay thousands of dollars for the perilous journey.”

Has anyone questioned the relatives on how the navy's negligence caused the tragedy? Was the Yola torpedoed?
Perhaps the navy should have been providing a free ferry service, and a naval escort in case the Puerto Rican coast-guard puts up some resistance?
Really!

I have to agree. Just like being parked on the side of the road...4-ways flashing...and getting hit by a motoconcho......MY FAULT....by Dominican logic! Why can Dominicans not take personal responsibility for the poor decisions some make? If you want to be viewed as the advanced society many think themselves to be....take SOME RESPONSABILITY!

PuntaCanaMike, "advanced society" means mimicking perceived American consumerism, and eating take-away off disposable plates. Cooking and washing dishes is for backward peasants.
