Boatpeople confirmed dead 22; at least 29 still missing

Sabana de la Mar, Dominican Republic.- Rescuers found the bodies of two women and a man noon Monday, two of which couldn’t be identified because of their advanced decomposition.

The number of confirmed dead now stands at 22, 10 women and 12 men, while at least 29 are still missing from the Saturday night sinking of a makeshift boat headed to Puerto Rico with an undetermined number of undocumented travelers, Navy Chief of Staff Luis Castro said in a statement.

Dozens of people, mostly residents of San Francisco de Macorís, went to Acapulco beach at Sabana de la Mar after news of their missing relatives.

The found bodies were taken to the Elupina Cordero Hospital morgue, while problems including a lack of fuel on glitches in the town’s only gas station plague the rescue effort.
