Fact is the reporting of the minor quakes is like providing news there was a sunrise today. They are non-events. When a quake is strong enough to shake me out of bed/off the couch or make the furniture move about, then consider it newsworthy.

Too much reporting of these events only creates fear among the uneducated population to the point where some are losing sleep. I know of some. It is best for the media to take the position of what they don't know won't hurt them.

@ Zooma- totally concur. With the amount of publicity these tremors get, they should invest in a good public-awareness campaign while the shakes are still being felt....

Broad view:

A heavy vehicle passing nearby on the street causes ground shaking to adjacent properties, the people live with it, they tune it out. Not newsworthy. If the vehicle smashes a house it is newsworthy.

Yet, an earth tremor of equal scale is considered newsworthy by the media. If a quake damages property or causes injury, it is newsworthy.
