Santo Domingo.- Six light tremors, the strongest of 4.6 magnitude, were detected in the East region near 12 midnight today, with only one felt by the population, without any reported damages, said the Santo Domingo State University Seismology Institute.
The USGS however said the first quake, magnitude 3.4, occurred near Punta Cana, with an epicenter at 19.841°N, 68.100°W, at a depth of 43 kilometers (26.7 miles) in the Mona Passage, alarming some communities.
The tremor was felt in Higüey, El Seibo, San Pedro and Boca Chica, and the Emergency Operations Center didn’t report any damages.
A second tremor came at 1:07am, with its epicenter also in the Mona Passage, and with a 3.2 magnitude.

Fact is the reporting of the minor quakes is like providing news there was a sunrise today. They are non-events. When a quake is strong enough to shake me out of bed/off the couch or make the furniture move about, then consider it newsworthy.
Too much reporting of these events only creates fear among the uneducated population to the point where some are losing sleep. I know of some. It is best for the media to take the position of what they don't know won't hurt them.
Broad view:
A heavy vehicle passing nearby on the street causes ground shaking to adjacent properties, the people live with it, they tune it out. Not newsworthy. If the vehicle smashes a house it is newsworthy.
Yet, an earth tremor of equal scale is considered newsworthy by the media. If a quake damages property or causes injury, it is newsworthy.
