SANTO DOMINGO.- Ruling PLD party candidate Danilo Medina would win with 48.3% of the votes if the elections were today, against 41.2% for the opposition PRD party’s Hipólito Mejía, according to the pollster Insight.
The survey, conducted from March 5 to 9 asked 1,200 eligible voters nationwide found that the ticket of the minority opposition PRSC party, headed by Medina, would win 1.3% of the votes, while Guillermo Moreno, of AlianzaPais, would obtain 1.4%.
The survey found that 2.2% would vote for other candidates; 3.3% wouldn’t vote and 2.3% are undecided. The poll's margin of error is 2.9%
Insight representative Luis Rojo said in its final projection the PLD will have a 7.2 point advantage over the PRD, and Medina would win with 49.8%, to 42.6% for the PRD.

If the predictions of the poll come to past, and Danilo Medina does win, we hope that he will be a lot better than LF in education, keeping graft and corruption in check, protecting our borders, and raising the quality of life for most Dominicans.
I have a hunch that possibly he will truly be a pleasant surprise for many of us.

Professor,
Danilo left Lie-onel’s government in 2006 to begin his presidential run for 2008. He lost to Lie-onel and said the state apparatus beat him. He then disappears says nothing about the stench and the pus of corruption exploding all around the PLD’s government . He then had about 6 or 7 fellow challengers in the Purple Primary including the president’s squeeze, who was chased out of the primary. He wins and is forced to accept her, a woman that has never been elected to anything or has held any significant political leadership position in the party. Not only that; he has “all the president’s men” running his campaign, especially the most notoriously suspected of corruption just to name one of the minor alleged offenses.
He is one record as saying he supports “ALL the work” of Lie-onel!"
So professor given that summarized narrative, why should we not expect more of the same from Mr. Medina, only worse?

My gut feeling is that once he arrives and sits in the "silla", he will do his own thing. My hunch is that he is playing along until he gets there, and then all bets are off.
If I was him, I would have never taken Margarita as a VP, but come to think about it, she has been a net gain for him, and the VP in DR, has no real power or even access to the president, except they both have an office in the same building.
I sure don't like the "pus" around him, like Felucho Jimenez and others, but you know the saying:
"Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer."
I will bet you anything that Danilo will be a pleasant surprise, and we really have no other sane option, because going with Hipoloco, just to protest the PLD ways under LF, would be madness.
PS: I had words in an surprised meeting in an elevator with Medina after "the state beat him", and he was very pissed, and I don't think he will forget the LF treachery so easily.

Professor,
Given those two statements don't you think Lie-onel is not aware of those possibilities?
I really feel that the biggest rival Danilo has against his presidential aspirations is Lie-onel Fernandez and here is why:
Right now Danilo and his core non-Lie-onel supporters are subservient to Lie-onel and his mafia; in power and financial resources. If Danilo were to win, he would have four years to purge the Lie-onel faithful (even you feel that’s his aim) and to accumulate significant resources to match Lie-onel’s bid at returning in 2016.

Add to that Danilo’s crowd now having tasted real money and drunk with power would yell, “Well if Lie-onel was president three times, why can’t Danilo be president twice.”
I really can’t believe that Lie-onel is that naive or fair, given all the manifestation of his classic Dominican caudillismo, to allow it to happen.
I am convinced that regardless of appearances Lie-onel is not or has ever been in Danilo’s corner. His wife is there to humiliate Danilo, just for appearances, resume filling and as part of the JUST in Case Factor!
But we are people who live off perception more than reality.

There is always that possibility that you mentioned. But it will be very risky for LF not to want Danilo to win, because the end result could be what happened to Salvador Jorge Blanco after the Balaguer victory in 1986, and Hipoloco might prosecute him for corruption. It is too much of a risk to take, besides even if Danilo goes for reelection, and I am sure he will if he gets elected, LF is still a young man, with plenty of political future left, and a chance to enjoy the honeys of international recognition, after 8 years.
LF is backing Danilo with all of the PLD heavy hitters and resources, so if that was the case you mentioned, then it wouldn't be so clear that he is behind him.
From I know about Danilo, he is very much a numbers man, and a very able and capable manager, and when he selected Margarita, he was influenced by the good poll numbers for her election.
Be patient josean, slowly but surely the "train will arrive at the station" even if it takes a generation.

Generoso I hope you are right and that if Danilo is elected he will prove to be his own man and not a puppet of LF via Margarita. I wonder if accepting her as a running mate was not the price Danilo had to pay to get support from LF & the PLD hierarchy both for his nomination and now campaign.
One thing is sure in that if he was to come out in the open with policies that could be detrimental to those currently in power he would have no support and Mejia would win and LF would be able to come back as the countries Savior in 2016.
The negative is that assuming Danilo wins he can only stay one term under the current constitution and with LF's control I don't see a change being possible. That being the case the door is open to either LF or Margarita being back in power in 2016, any good work Danilo can do being reversed and the DR returning to where it is now. And the other possibility is LF and Margarita taking turns at being President effectively creating a perpetual dynasty.

If something unfortunate were to happen to Danilo then the Mrs would be president (you don't really believe that she would be calling the shots, do you?) and would stand for reelection. Medina is not going to change anything. Just look at the team around him, Cesar Jose De Los Santos who ruined the tourism on the north coast, Franzisko Javier the gran executioner of DR tourism, Kuki Silverio y Chichi Selman waiting for their share of the cake.
It is sad but Hipo seems to be the only chance to get rid of these bandits at this time. At least the north coast will recuperate since Luis Abinader has big investments in Cabarete and Sosua.
