Santo Domingo.- Opposition PRD party presidential candidate Hipólito Mejía on Tuesday said he wasn’t surprised by statements by the organization’s president, Miguel Vargas, who earlier had stated that he’ll “maintain an institutional attitude in the current electoral campaign," but was "neither a messenger nor street sweeper of campaign headquarters.”
Mejía said it’s been Vargas’ norm to remain at an institutional side, and hasn’t counted with his support for the campaign.
He said Vargas’ “messenger street sweeper” statement was in response to former PRD leader Hatuey de Camps, when he said in a speech that the PRD’s rank and file would use brooms to symbolize the defeat over the ruling PLD party in the next elections.
“I’ll not only extend an olive branch to him, in fact a trunk” to Vargas, Mejía added, to note he’s interest in obtaining the PRD president’s support.

This event must be a Guinness world of records first, the president of the opposition party refuses to endorse and campaign for the party's candidate.
Only in DR you will ever see this.
But on second thought I don't blame Miguel Vargas one bit, for not endorsing Hipoloco after the double cross that he suffered with Mejia's treason and sly ways.
Voters should really take these happenings has a clue, of how low Mejia's stock is, for those that really know him well.

Was Ted Kennedy head of the Democratic party then? No he was not, he was just an opposing candidate.
BTW: Carter won with almost twice the votes!

The PRD can not undue its worst mistake: having the Hippo as the candidate in May 2012.
They made their bed now they are forced to sleep on it, bedbugs and all.

Professor,
These guys are all unscrupulous business men; Hipólito, Vargas, Hatuey and Amable. It’s all a business venture and in the end they like money more than their egos.
Vargas knows Hatuey made his deal;Amable is buszzing around Hipólito and Lie-onel for a little nectar as well.
Vargas is playing hard to get but in the end he will cut his deal also, because of all of them, he has the most business acumen and probably the least scruples, if any of them have any left.
Possibly after March 18th, when Amable stated he will announce who he will get in bed with!
Then, Vargas who thinks he can get the better deal as the last holdout, even if means crossing over to Purple Turf will come to the table!

Excellent and factual analysis, you are absolutely correct. All the major party candidates are just businessmen, looking for a piece of the pie.
Miguel Vargas most likely has a deal with Danilo Medina, to get some public works through some shell companies, since an Hipolito win, will set his own presidential ambitions back four or more years.
I really doubt that he will ever back Hipolito, as it seems he is pretty pissed at him, but who knows, like you said, money talks, BS walks.

Remember you're comparing 2 smart people, don't mention these two morons here.

...and this is just one of the many things he used to make fun of the little people back then.

Hey Josean, just a little bit of inside scoop as of Vargas possision in this election. 1st Vargas does not wants Hipolito to win because if Hipolito will stop all the government construction starting with the Metro of Santo Domingo were VARGAS company is the biggest one doing the work, something like 60% and if Danilo wins the will be build and Vargas will make more money. So you see Vargas is very smart man and is campaigning for the PLD party to win to his own beneficts.

bernies,
You’re absolutely right!
In my senile years I have overlooked the fact that Vargas is the" Manchurian Candidate" that was part of Lie-onels Plan to control EVERYTHING including the PRD!
Thanks again!
