The lighthouse at Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico has become the boatpeople's beacon of hope.

Higüey, Dominican Republic.- Dominican boatpeople’s desperate quest to reach Puerto Rico has now widened to include the even more impoverished Haitians, as evidenced in yesterday’s shipwreck in an isolated beach, in eastern Altagracia province.

Several Haitians who survived the mishap near Punta el Coco said they each paid around US$2,000 to try to reach Puerto Rico. Josefa Pie said that set off at 4pm yesterday from the beach near Nisibón, where they were allegedly seen off by two Navy sailors, believed to be in cahoots with the trip’s organizers.

At least 14 men and 8 women have been rescued thus far near La Vacama beach after the 32-foot boat with two outboard motors hit rocks and sank near shore.

One Dominican and three Haitian women were hospitalized after the rescue. Clarisse Vásquez, 25; Nairobi Jean, 22, Josefa Pie, 28 and Evelyn Joseph, 23

“There are six people among us of Haitian nationality missing, three men and three women,” said one of the survivors who didn’t want their name used. They said they were saved miraculously by holding on to the boat’s remnants and gas tanks until reaching land.

The shipwreck reportedly resulted from a fight among the boatpeople, some of whom wanted to return to shore on fears of the high swells.

This is an expected consequence of crime. Why does the rest of the world think that America owes them housing and jobs and medical care and school for their kids? And with no more effort than a criminal act? It's a tragedy that people die trying to cheat, but why didn't they try to spend is this much money apiece building up their own country?

Has the price gone up since the last tragedy, or are Haitians required to pay more for a trip to the promised land?

"This is an expected consequence of crime. Why does the rest of the world think that America owes them housing and jobs and medical care and school for their kids?"

WTF are you talking about!!!?

Yes, I disagree with these trips and with illegal immigration, but most Americans that of 3rd generation or greater, and/or are totally disconnected from their mother lands (because all Americans are immigrants, remember?) are completely clueless about immigration issue (like you are)

They are not coming because of "crime".. they are coming because they are desperately looking for work and the social barriers they come across in their homelands, because of lack of proper education among other things does not allow them to obtain a competitive salary to support their families.

These people don't think "America", or properly put the "United States" owes them anything! They come to work and do those jobs Americans or legal residents don't want to do.

Please, get this in your mind "NOBODY, absolutely NOBODY, gives these illegal immigrants any handouts like medical care and housing as you say... they are illegal buddy!!!, they don't have the US Citizenship or Legal Residence to qualify for those handout services.. the exception to this are public schools.. illegal children still are allowed to have an education (but pay through their noses if they are still illegal and try to go to college), and the one other exception are Cubans, as soon as they touch on US soil our taxes give them everything they need to get their new American lives started (talk about preferred treatment).... so please educate yourself before writing sh^t!

These people know there is no employment left in USA. They are coming to loot the rest of what government has not yet taken. The information they have is not up to date. There is nothing left to take. Save your $$ and stay home where you have more freedoms

lovingit,
1) They are criminals since they have broken American law by entering illegally.
2) If they have forged documents then they can get the same handouts as genuine American Citizens.
3) They could fly to San Juan from Santo Domingo 1st class cheaper than risking their life in a yola, so they know they are breaking the law, and that for whatever reason, they can not enter legally.
4) From the look of the photos and the $2,000 US fare, they could not be at the point of starvation in the Dominican Republic. "Poor" Dominicans get a lot of benefits from the government, but these criminals obvious want more.

Roy, Obama has a fake birth electronic file. He has no documentation. He should not be walking the streets of america much less occupy the presidents seat. If he can do it, everybody can do it. Come one, come all. US Govt wants illegals to drive down wages of legal americans

Vivacuba,
The "Obama fake birth-certificate" conspiracy has long been proven just that, burred and forgotten. If there was any substance in it, his political opponents, of whom there are many, would be exploiting it to the fullest still. Only Americans born on American soil can be president, which in my view is a stupid rule. The current Australian Prime Minister was born in Wales (UK), many Governor Generals were born outside Australia, and the ultimate Head of State, Queen Elizabeth II is English. am not in favor or the current Prime Minister but I am in favor of the system and rules that put her there.

lovingit; Don't try to condescend to a real human who has real experience in the real world. The only immigrants alive in America right now are the people that immigrated during their lives. I'm betting I have equal experience immigration process as anyone commenting on this thread. What I don't have any ignorant biased hatreds. The minute any foreigner attempts to violate our borders they are a criminal forever and deserve nothing from the American population. We cannot support every slug that thinks it's entitled to live off of us. Hana immigration is allowed from just about every country in the world. It takes work it, takes time and it takes a responsible adult.

Barry Soetoro does not have a paper birth record. It has not been produced because it does not exist. The electronic file that surfaced was forensically examined and determined to be fraudulent deficient and altered in several areas. Additionally, all birth records in the National Archives are mysteriously missing for the week he was allegedly born in Hawaii. There is also a current executive order permitting only the office of the presidency and the Justice Department to release information from which they deem appropriate for the public to see. Barry has spent millions of dollars in the court system to prevent the release of any alleged birth record. Why?

I see you still have problems with reading comprehension.

When DaveB said "This is an expected consequence of crime" the context points that people are migrating from their home countries because of crime. He later says "The minute any foreigner attempts to violate our borders they are a criminal forever" so maybe he meant that they are criminals, though that it is not what is written though, which coincides with what you wrote below, but let me enlighten you:

1) They are criminals since they have broken American law by entering illegally.
Being an illegal immigrant in the US is not a federal criminal offense, therefore, it does not make you a "criminal" the only exception is Arizona where it is a state criminal offense, but still not federal. Other aspects of helping your illegality (i.e. forged papers or assuming an identity) may be criminal offenses, though, the majority of illegal immigrants are simply undocumented, in other words, no US issued docs, forged or not.

Maybe it is that easy in Australia, forged documents in the US stopped working years ago when it comes to state and federal programs because of the amount of scrutiny that people and the papers they present go through. They might be able to help you get a job at a small business, but they are not good enough to even get a license or work at a large corporation. Assuming a legal person's identity is perhaps the best way to get legitimate docs, but often, the person willing to give away their identity is a criminal or drug attic which end up hurting the recipient of the doc more than helping them.

The truth is, even if the paperwork seem legit, the majority of illegal immigrants are actually TOO AFRAID to even attempt to get handouts.

Your first 4 sentences from "DaveB, 14 Apr 2012 12:49 PM" Don't make any sense

You later say:

Forget it, DHS has installed offshore underwater electric fences to electrocute perpetrators and electronic ignition cutouts for boats that depart each nations international water boundaries.
