Santo Domingo.- The CEO of the State-owned electric utility (CDEEE) on Sunday demanded more severe penalties against those charged with sabotage against the national power grid, in actions he describes as terrorism of the country’s security.

Celso Marranzini regrets that most power line sabotage cases are still pending in court, while only fines imposed on a few others.

He said judges should be more drastic in applying the law against those who steal wires and metals from the grid, especially those who topple high voltage towers.

Marranzini said more than 20 people face charges of sabotage and theft of electrical towers in various provinces thus far.

josean,
Lionel's presidency is almost over and his involvement with this insignificant little country has already given way to his performance on the world stage.
If Hippo becomes president, which according to the polls is a real possibility, then 4% of GDP expenditure on education will actually be a reduction on the current expenditure in real terms, since the total GDP will plummet. Unfortunately Moreno is not in the running, so don't waste your vote - give it to Danelo.

Shot them on the spot ain in place and man hole lid thieves as well. It is only a matter of time untill these activites cause 'collateral' death to innocents. What does a scrap dealer think he is buying when he gets a truck load of galvinized steel angle iron. That said high ranking thieves shouldl be held accountable as well.

DomRat,
It is common knowledge that the law is not enforced here, however is receiving stolen goods a crime in the Dominican Republic as it is in many countries?
They steal the transmission towers, the cables and electricity. Have any generators been stolen as yet?

Surprising the numbers of electricty thieves that have cooked themselves trying to hook up during power outages and been surprised by the return of power, not uncommon - wonder if amyone keeps statistics. I know of two personally and read of quite a few more.
