Santo Domingo.- The State-owned electric utility (CDEEE) and the electricity distributing companies (Edes) began naming the sectors which don’t pay their entire bill and therefore don’t qualify to surpass the D classification, the lowest in cash recovery.

The Utility said the upscale sectors Arroyo Hondo and Puerta de Hierro have long blackouts because of the lack of payment, despite the many upper class people who live there.

In a statement, Edesur said the reason Puerta de Hierro gets prolonged outages, is because energy theft is too high, for which the zone is category D on electricity losses that exceed 40%.

It said Puerta de Hierro is supplied an average of RD$1.2 million worth of energy monthly, but Edesur collects barely RD$700,000.

CDEEECEO Celso Marranzini said it’s a shame that upscale sectors such as Puerta de Hierro fail to a pay for the electricity supplied. “Edesur’s Social Management Team has met with the neighborhood boards several times to agree on ways to eradicate the zone’s accumulated fraud.”

The official added that the community has even resisted efforts to regularize the grid, by Edesur’s use of changing to underground cables.

They should cut the power lines that supply that sector untill everyone pays up. I don't understand why the people that have money are the ones that try to get away without paying. I guess that is why they have lots of money.

The power companies need to get stricter with non payments and theft.

AC,

IF these folks are not paying their dues, they deserve the cuts. Too many Dominicans-of all classes-think that others should pay. The nation needs to send a clear message.

"They should cut the power lines that supply that sector untill everyone pays up"

Why should a whole sector suffer? How about correct the infrastructure so that electric companies could rely 100% on per customer basis for payments, non-payments and and theft rather than punish a whole sector?

EVERYBODY SHOULD PAY! Rich, Poor or middle class.

BUT

The Idea that the areas that have a more affluent population pay less of their share than those in the Barrios is preposterous at best and a blatant lie to buy votes at worse,

Agree AnthonyC!

Everyone, why do you think that electricity in DR is one of the most expensives all around?
Because those that do pay, pay for those that don't pay to make up for the slack.

And then on top of that throw a blackouts?

F^ck that!

I have seen whole buildings in las Caobas that simply suck off the system without one stinking meter!!!

I am glad my home is now in a sector where we get electricity 99% of the time, but boy I recall the days when there was on average a 8-10hr blackout daily. Frustrating!!!

Still my electric bill in DR is almost 3 times higher than the electric I pay in the US and that is with a house that is 1.5 times bigger and has central heat and central air, whereas my house in DR only has AC in the bedrooms which are used mainly at night.

EVERYBODY NEEDS TO PAY ELECTRICITY.

So now you are Dominican?

Celso may be leveraging the political environment, but I do not see why that matters.

What matters is he is using the only ways he has to get these inbred entitlement morons to pay their fair share.

He's gone after the poor barrios and now he should try and embarrass the richer people. Of course, in my experience, NOTHING embarrasses a Dominican. They have perfected the Groundhogs day mentality to a science.

AND, yes, turn off EVERYONE'S lights is correct. How else are you going to get the people that pay to DO something about the scum that do not. If 100 people show they pay and are not stealing any electricity maybe they will be put on their own transformer. I've seen that done.

Note:

Celso could you update if Euclides Gutierrez, a founding member of the PLD and a member of its exclusive Billionaires Club AKA the Political Committee, has paid the $3,000,000 million pesos he owes?

Or is he still threatening your employees when they go to cut him off with the armed Goons we Dominican Taxpayers provide him?

as expected, anthonyc comes to the rescue of the rich. after all, only poor people are born with the dishonesty gene. only poor people have character flaws. guys like Bernie Madoff are really just misunderstood saints, defamed by the enablers of the great unwashed. to suggest that rich people in the Dominican Republic could ever conceive of stealing electricity is little more than an an election stunt. what preposterous nonsense! rich people stealing? i am astonished.
