Santo Domingo.- American ambassador Raul Yzaguirre yesterday confirmed a process initiated against the country in the United States Department of Labor, but noted that in his view, “it’s not of great importance" and that “there’s no reason for something negative.”
Yzaguirre met with officials of the Labor and Foreign Relations ministries, one day after Foreign Relations minister Carlos Morales revealed that the priest Christopher Hartley has filed a complaint against country in Washington, on alleged violations of labor laws in sugar cane plantations, based on chapter 16 of the RD-Cafta free trade pact.
“We’re clarifying the situation and we have very good relations, and we expect something fruitful and beneficial for workers and the relations between both countries," the diplomat said.

Josean,
Perhaps you missed my expressed preference for traditional Catholic architecture, art-treasures, music, ritual, Gregorian chanting, incense, altar-wine and funny hats, over tuneless, soul-less, colorless Evangelical bible-bashing. I grant an exemption to the Mormon Church in Santo Domingo - they provide many volnteers for environmental clean-up at VidaAzul, and an excellent live jazz concert with a Dominican jazz quartet, American vocal ensemble and big-band (and no bible-bashing).

Perhaps the best solution to this confounded and confused predicament-- which smears our image further-- is to mechanize the whole process of planting, harvesting, and processing the sugar industry.....This way, many will lose their livelihood, and reasons to claim inhumane treatment!
Let them eat cake!

Mr Yzaguirre is in denial or maybe he is protecting a close connection with the sugar industry. What firm represents the Sugar Association Inc and has a board member on the AMCHAMDR. Doesnt an exUSambassador work for that firm. What hypocrisy.

Ron.. well put...
The fine line is always there... pay the workers more or mechanize the process....
You pay your worker more then it becomes cheaper to run the whole process with machinery and employ just a few??? Keep paying them the same and keep them all employed???
Fine line...Pro and cons of traditional v industrial farming ....
Especially when crop prices go down or stay the same, fuel goes up and cost of living continually goes up for all ...??
It seems more employers here care more for getting a new Mercedes than paying their workers a fair wage.

@Stillhere.
The sugar industry in DR-- because of it's antiquated methods of processing it's product, has come to symbolize slavery and opression for the least educated and disenfranchised peoples on the island.
It is, admittedly, brutal and low-pay work. Living conditions in the Bateys, are awful, at best....It is no wonder that many a foreigner would cry foul at the very sight, and tried to right this wrong!
I'm guessing-- correct me if I'm wrong-- that having a job, however brutal, and a roof, however leaky, is better than none.
I'm not advocating abuse or exploitation of these people, and they ought to be helped; I'm saying that they aren't the "slaves", the priest,et al, portrait them to be!

Who is working in the bateys and sugar plantations?? Haitians!!
Haitians=trouble and problems for Dominicans in ALL ANGLES!!
I am very glad the sugar industry get this type of attention...one day hopefully soon, they will wake up and will try to solve the problems and troubles by using machinery to run their plantations. Period.
That day need to come quickly.
We need to get rid of all THE BATEYS.

We demand cheap labor and Haitians supply it.
Until that equation is changed nothing will change for either community.

I mean, people like you and you army of Anti-Dominicans are the one complaining about the bateys conditions troubles and problems, right? So the fairest solution to the problems and trouble is to close them down. Simple.
Can't wait the day that happens. And it better happen soon.
And I also think, all those Dominicans not making me proud should be sent back to DR put in jail and forced to do the jobs the Haitians are doing, now we’ll be killing two birds with one stone.

Eliminate the need for Haitians to provide cheap labor by implementing mechanization?
These machines cost a lot more than prestige vehicles. Prestige comes first. Also banks need collateral for such substantial loans. You can't mortgage a property without a proper title. Furthermore such sophisticated equipment requires expertise in its operation and maintenance, neither being available on this island. That's why Haiti had to import mechanics from Cuba to maintain their buses.
