Santo Domingo.- Spanish agents seized 708 kilos of cocaine hidden in a container full of coconuts from Dominican Republic after its arrival at Barcelona Port on Friday, revealed Harbor Security chief Alejandro Anelho, quoted by Efe.

The Spanish Civil Guard official said the haul, among the agency’s biggest drug busts, was made on March 12 during an internal traffic check of a truck as it was about to exit the port.

He said police haven’t made any arrests thus far because the traffickers hid the cocaine in the container unbeknownst to the shipping company.

The Civil Guard added that the shipment originated in the Dominican Republic, from where another load of nearly 1,000 kilos of cocaine were seized last year at Barcelona port, aboard a freighter from Brazil.

BASTA must be going completely off his mind at the thought of all this stuff being burnt ,,
I thought it was relatively easy to see if the various locks and tags on the container had been tampered with ,,this is basically the same exxcuse as was used with the huge amount of drugs found in a medical consignment from la Romana .It was alleged the container was interferred with between la Romana and Haina .
I think all that is total bullshit and it is easy for the shipping companies to see if the container is perfectly ok as it was when it was closed and sealed after being filled or whether it has been tampered with . It is obviously that the port authorities from the ship or the government are in on the act ...
When can people here act responsibly ??

Ricky asks.
"When can people here act responsibly?"
When the law is upheld. (Don't hold your breath)
It seems almost everyone is on the take on this country, at one level or another. The quality of leadership reflects on the quality of those lead, I believe. In what other country could you have a president like Hippo being a contender again?

Leaving Australia, NZ ,Singapore, Canada,Scandanavia and the UK aside I wonder if there are, indeed many countries where politicicnas are not corrupt ..Corruption is appalling in China and in Thailand bent the tax laws to run off with hundreds of millions of dollars and in Malaysia ,opposition candidates are imprisoned on false charges and all through Africa and in The Philippines there is corruption when doing business ...In Russia it is now appalling as it is in Italy , Greece and in the Balkans . If you look at the Latin American countries , Chavez has amassed a fortune through his brand of communism and there are always rumours in Brazil .
The only small consolation here is that at least the country is going forward ..In two weeks I have 2 xourt cases where I am supposed to help the prosecution in cases that have been built up on false evidence .Yes corruption is at all levels but just like in other countries it is very hard for an individual to do anything

Ricky,
I don't think any country is totally devoid of corruption. It is all a matter of degree. Once the level of corruption reaches a certain critical mass, then it becomes almost impossible to irradiate. Should an honest, idealist gain sufficient power to do something about it, they are faced with a choice - fight it and risk one's own life, and perhaps no thanks or recognition from the masses, or accept it and gain unimaginable wealth.
I believe that most Australian politicians enter politics believing they are going to do something good for the country. I disagree with most of them, but believe their hearts are in the right place. However when faced with the cold, hard realities of the process, some of their ideals are compromised. Still they don't do it for the money and most make more outside of politics than within it. The situation seems to be the reverse here.

As I have said before
Most go into politics it to help the country no matter their political philosophy, you go into the private sector to make money... Here it seems to be the other way around..... But you can make money in the private sector here if you have political friends.

My preference is baked, but not so common these days. How about a Dominican adaptation of a Jewish cheese blintz - using dark rum, accompanied by strong Dominican coffee, with whipped cream (Vienna style) without sugar (of course). Mmmm!
