Santo Domingo.- Representative of Samaná province (northeast) institutions yesterday pledged to protect their environment, and signed an agreement with the authorities to advance that cause.

The pact signed with Environment minister Ernesto Reyna includes a campaign to educate and promote citizen participation to protect and conserve rivers, streams and gorges; provide information on sustainable water use, reforest ravaged areas, and prosecute arsonists who unleash wildfires.

The communities will also work to improve waste management, while the authorities will provide trash cans and build a sanitary landfill and fund an anti-din campaign and promote sustainable fishing and tourism practices, and to observe the humpbacked whales.

And to guarantee follow-up to the pact and the Provincial Environmental Agenda, Samana’s key personalities formed the Provincial Environmental Council.

Why is this day and age where almost everything recyclable, they are not putting in recycling center then will have very little need for any land fill... BAN Styrofoam, put a deposit on glass and plastic bottles or if not recyclable then don't allow them, most steel is already recycled, use green waste for compost and bio-gas,,, there you go ....what is left to put into land fill?????

I hope this goes well and can make some kind of impact in the communities, so this beautiful area can remain that way.....

There are already alternatives to the standard plastic shopping bag...
So why do we not have them ???
With out taking measures that are already available nothing will change and more crap will continue to flow down the rives and end up on the beaches....

Yes I believe they can .. you need to use the one thing they understand.... money... showing how changes can be financially beneficial TO THEM .... if you say it is beneficial to all they will ask but what in it for me.... hahahha

stillhere and Ricky,
I agree absolutely with banning these things, or at least putting substantial bounties on them to ensure they are returned, and where appropriate, re-used or re-cycled. I presented such a proposal to a Deputy Environment Minister (I didn't know there were many of them at the time) however no-one has the guts to present this as a Bill to Congress. Hence "provide trash cans and building a sanitary landfills" is a welcome next-best option. Definitely a move in the right direction and should be supported.

An "an anti-din campaign" would also be most welcome. I noticed the restaurants on the beach in Carbarete provide pleasant background music. It is just that - pleasant and in the background, which is what foreign tourists expect. Who knows, maybe this novel idea might catch on amongst Dominicans too?

The first thing they should do is arrest and incarcerate anyone who litters Then you wouldn't need nor feel good advocating these fascists rules like banning a useful product like plastic bags and Styrofoam.

Yes. I said it. Punish those who break the law not those who are responsible.

Roy,

You know as well as I do that as soon as you start tossing a first few in jail for littering the rest will get their act together quickly.

Roystone, yesterday i watched a group of people who were getting free food from a government truck. they showed up with various receptacles, among them styrofoam plates, and clamshells. they all sat on the sidewalk eating their rations, and, when the event was over, the area looked like Dresden after the bombings. not ONE person disposed the plate in a garbage can. they left them right where they ate, and walked away. look at the road between La Vega, and Bonao, and ask yourself how a people can be so environmentally apathetic. how can you fix that?

Dready,
I have seen this all over the country. However occasionally I come across a town that is very clean. The people look the same, and seem to speak the same language, however it appears like a totally different country. Perhaps if you found out why there is such a stark difference, you would be well under way towards finding a solution?

You mean like a those in jail for not following the road rules???

"advocating these fascists rules like banning a useful product like plastic bags and Styrofoam."

And those fascist rules about seat belts and the use of lead in make up, paint or plumbing.. right??

Steps have always been taken to improve life for all and some times need to be made into laws so the improvements remain...
Common sense would tell you not to pour cyanide into the water table, but it does not work to just tell industry not to do it???? ...
So common sense would imply to not keep producing product that don't biodegrade or that can't be recycled, that don't need to be placed in land fill for future generation to deal with...
Is that fascist???
Or is it not leaving mounds of toxic crap and rubbish filled beaches for our children?

so, dreamkiller, what do you have to say about that one? you think i am the only one perturbed by the garbage? just in case you don´t get it, tourists from clean countries, like Canada, hate to see garbage , everywhere. when they land here, it is not anti Dominican propaganda that makes them aware of it. their own eyes do. numbskull.
