PUERTO PLATA, Dominican Republic. - A transport worker from Cabarete filed a charge of attempted murder against that community’s mayor, and requested a prison sentence and 25 million in damages.
According to the complaint the transport worker Ambiorix Vargas and two other people in a car passed closed to Gabriel Mora’s (Canoa) SUV on March 15 near 5pm, when the Mayor pulled a pistol and fired three times until bystanders managed to stop him. Vargas said his car has three bullet holes from the gun fired.
Mora has had a string of violent incidents and contempt of court, stemming from the official’s refusal to comply with a judge’s ruling to hand over all of the Municipal District’s financial information to the Cabarete Development Association (ADECA).
ADECA Board member Gay Crosier said it’s the fourth violent incident involving Mora.

He's above all those that are above the law.
Not one case against him has followed due course.
Inbred entitlement reptilian brain mentality.

He is either a poor shot or just wanted to vent his displeasure and power. Either way it is a shame the other guy was not armed and a good shot as 'boot hill' justice seems to be the only way to get any justice. Yes, I know all about turning the other cheek and a 'kind word turnuth away wrath'; I am still waiting for jsutice in the incident where a court official in Sousa had about 30 rounds pumped into his car and sat there immobile until the bastards decided he was not going to attempt to return fire and shot him in the head. Until that and a host of other problems are addressed - I support anybody but the present power players.

"bystanders managed to stop him" - now that's an improvement.

This SOB embodies everything that is WRONG with the DR, as one of the many regional mafias who have divided up the country into turfs where they can act with total impunity as UNTOUCHABLES in a BANANA REPUBLIC that has laws to decorate books and law enforcement that looks good in uniforms at parades!
Investors beware DON'T INVEST IN THE DR until you can have lawful justice to protect you!

Are mayors elected by the people in their municipality?

Thanks, bernies,
My understanding is Cabarete has many foreigners living there. How did they elect a thug like this?
In San Crstobal or mayor is a thief who does nothing for the city, however he is a famous former base-ball star, so that explains his election. My understanding is he's PLD, and was formerly PRD and before that, another. Seems he only has allegiance to his pocket.

RoyStone, most expats are residents, not citizens, and can't vote. Cabarete Dominicans outnumber the expats living there 2 or 3 to one. Check Google earth and look at the size of the barrios in the area.
This mayor is a totally illiterate thug, who needs to be caged. He is exactly the kind of person nobody wants to see anywhere outside a jail, much less as mayor. That said, I wonder if Synapse makes the same recommendations to investors about Florida, where you can not only be shot at, but murdered for wearing a hoodie???

Thank, Cabaretecanuck,
To what do you attribute this violence in Florida?
Strictly speaking, such violence may not detract from the investment potential in Florida, (I stress investment, not living or visiting there) however I would suggest a criminal mayor would impinge on my decision to invest in Carbarete.

He wasn´t really elected. He is a PRSC ex-councillor in Sosúa and was given the mayor's office in Cabarete in execution of the mutual back-scratching between his party and the Purple Gang.
Total impunity came with the job.

Is this not a very simple case of attempted murder???
Opening fire in public at someone.....
What are the police doing???
Why is he not in jail right now???

It's the second time he's pumped rounds into a near-by vehicle.
He bought a nice shiny new car, and apparently doesn't like anybody getting too close to it.
The man is a goon. He bought his election results and still barely won, he's reported to have spent DOP$16,000,000 to be mayor of Cabarete (???) and he's trying to make the expenditure pay dividends.
Apparently he figures the job makes him bulletproof to the courts, etc. He's going to find out different. Expats didn't elect him, but they are leading the charge to get him put away. He spends more time in court than anywhere else - which is why he's in such a foul mood all the time (and shoots at things?)

30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.

This thug is supporting the PLD presidential candidate Danilo Medina on several huge billboards between Sosua and Cabarete. Think for yourself why this criminal is not jailed yet.
