Santo Domingo.- The government subsidy for the electricity bill reached RD$7.4 billion in the first five months, with RD$1.8 billion allocated to the electrical sector just in May to keep the cost unchanged.
Electricity superintendent Juan Bautista Gomez said SIE Resolution 361/2012 will keep the May bill unchanged, even when the index is based on the price of Fuel Oil number 6, which rose 2.3% and the dollar’s monthly average exchange rate, which inched from RD$39.06 a RD$39.08. He said cost of coal remained at US$110.12 per MMBTU.
The Resolution adds that the variations led May’s rate to climb 1.51% higher than April, but the tariff in effect continues being indexed at 44.5% lower, with the electric bill subsidy of more than RD$1.0 billion.

Until all these subsidies are substantially driven down and market rate structures advanced DR will see too much of its investment capital feeding sectors that should be left to the marketplace at the expense of other sectors like education that need more resources.

When you have neither the brains nor the desire to force people to pay for their electricity rather than allowing them to steal it,you wind up having to subsidize the theft.

Deputies get RD$136 million for Mother's Day
According to news reports, Dominican legislators have all but abandoned their legislative work, but taxpayers will still be obliged to an extra RD$136 million for their discretional distribution on Mother's Day, which is celebrated in late May in the Dominican Republic. El Caribe reports that the Chamber of Deputies has only held 10 of its 26 regular sessions, or 39.5% of commitments for these highly paid government officials. El Caribe says the chamber is "more a platform for electoral commentary than a legislative body."
As reported in El Caribe on 27 April, the Chamber of Deputies will distribute 421 articles valued at RD$136,644,256 to its 183 members for subsequent distribution in their communities on Mother's Day, Sunday, 27 May. In addition, the deputies will receive RD$50,000-RD$100,000 in cash to organize the distribution.

Just remember that this 'government support me mentality" has been well practiced for several generations beginning with at least the Trujillo Dictatorship. The Balaguer Era didn't force through the needed changes, in fact, it utilized the Entitlement offerings and the growing dependency link to its advantage and the overall disadvantages to the State and Nation. And for those that think this merely a small nation or lower development problem, think again. Many of the ex-socialist nations are still.......... caught in it, as are many of the Western European nations. Government handouts have always carried with them the problem of dependency. Richer nations have been able to divert wealth while still... not starving other important sectors. But small developing nations like the DR find it almost impossible to do so without massive support from aboard. DR has to learn to do without many of these market distorting schemes or it will not advance to legitimate fiscal standards

VOTES, they rather pay subsidy for people STEALING the power than lose their votes by doing what the LAW says, the same reason why this IRRESPONSIBLE goverment has the fuel prize FROZEN for six and soon to be seven weeks during the election time since they don't have a clear victory.
