Santo Domingo.- 49 percent of Dominicans say the country isn’t headed in the right direction.

For many rising crime and unemployment are the main reasons for their dissatisfaction.

But crime is their main concern, climbing four points to 55 percent since the last Greenberg survey published by newspaper Diario Libre at the beginning of March, while worries of unemployment have jumped seven points to 45 percent.

Gender also plays a role in that perception: Women are more concerned with crime, with 57 percent stating it as the main concern, three percentage points higher than the beginning of March), while the men are more focused on unemployment, or 10 points higher to 49 percent.

Dominican architecture reflects the extensive fear of crime in this country.

The situation is getting worse. The crime has become a cancer on the society and there is no facility to fight it. The government is not fulfilling its obligation to protect the people and the people have given up on making demands on a government that is infected with this cancer through and through. Thus, the wounded society festers and the cancer grows. The politicians can promise a cure all they want. If and when a miracle treatment does arrive the gov't will have to be first in line to get the benefit.

It is not just the PLD, it is the government as a whole that needs house cleaning. They, the politicians, all come from the same school.and to single one party out over the others to be sent to the woodshed just leaves the others to continue the mayhem and the public to suffer their indifference

crime is a worry and as has been the case for years so is the search for a job ,,but youth employment has grown here ,,the biggest problem we have here is that Dominican labour is not very mobile and so most families stay in the same geographical area , where as the Haitians are very mobile and have taken many new jobs in the developing areas of Punta Cana Bavaro and Samana and NE Santo Domingo

Every Dominican that I talked to about this accepts crime, violence, crooked businesses, thieving police, and an entirely corrupt government as the norm. They are currently right on par with the American populace. I can't see any solution, since any political party will just move into the same easy self-profiting pit.

Twelve reasons to vote against the DICTATORSHIP

(4) We have more public officials than necessary: 200 agencies that duplicate functions; some 300 Generals; another 300 Ministers and Deputy Ministers; an excess of diplomats; one of the most expensive congresses in the world, and "secret payrolls" for those who aren’t appointed to a job.

Ricardolito, I beg to differ with you. This is not a scientific response but it is my opinion the Haitians have taken many new jobs because the Dominicans do not want to do them. I live in one of the areas you mention and have offered minor construction and/or household jobs to both Dominican and Haitian residents near me. Most often the Haitians are the ones who will accept the offer, while the Dominicans will provide some long story, though they are looking for work, ie; they cannot commit to me because they have an offer for a long term job and are waiting for the call to report.

Dominicans are predominantly the decedents of African slaves and Spanish colonialists, and Haitians are predominantly the decedents of African slaves and French colonists. Yet Dominicans seem to consider Haitians decedents of slaves, and and only fit for manual labor, whereas themselves decedents of European nobility, born for management positions only.

RoyStone.. You are VERY wrong..

Dominicans are decendents of spaniards, native americans, and african slaves
Haitians are decendents of african slaves, no mix.

Because of that we keep different traditions, culture , food ,religion , values, music, etc.

Like Dr. Dunker says in his:

"Twelve Reasons to Vote Against the DICTATORSHIP"

(9) The violence has multiplied. Our homes are prisons and offenders dominate the streets. Everybody is afraid, except the criminals. The school teachers are threatened by the students, and women are victims of their husbands. Such violence is the daughter of the disorder. Because we do not respect the rules is that we have so much violence.

"Josean's profile says he's not in the Dominican republic and he is critical of Dominican politics. Yes, he must be Haitian, just like me"

That's right, he's not! And not just "Dominican politics" that this one's critical about. It's about ALL things Dominican! No matter how great the news, it's always a "purple, clapping seals" and a "Lie-onel" ploy to steal money and the elections! Or negative crap to diminish all the good things happening in my DR!
The cretin has got me sick with his moronic postings about "choo-choo train" shit, and the constant rhetoric about education. The guy's one-dimentional and unawared of reality, doesn't have vision of what things could be, and totally incapable of rational and/or logical exchanges.
I can only conclude that this burro is a frustrated, hating, foreigner with an agenda to screw things up for us, Dominicans... I will pray to Our Lady of Dementia for his salvation from himself, and my redemption from all insults given..Amen.

So let's show some numbers:

Canasta familiar:
2000 $6,796.-
2004 $11,832.-

Criminality: 1092 Homicide a year to 2,263 a year

When people ask him why so much raise in criminality , Hipo says: " Yo no soy policia, cuidemonos todos"

Inflation at 2004 : 60%

Banco central lost 30% of it's reservas..

tasa de desempleo : 13.39% to 19.7% ( a record in dominican history)

Pobres: 27% to 43.1 %
Indigentes: 8% to 15.3%

We such reaction, where should we go?
