Santo Domingo.- The stealing of rearview mirrors, wheel centers, license plates, batteries and the emblems of vehicles have residents and visitors to the Colonial Zone on the brink of desperation, and some have resorted to the most ingenious method to foil the thieves.

The theft of accessories has become so frequent that several people cited by eldia.com.do said one same piece has been robbed as many as four times, losing as much as 16,000 pesos in each case.

They blame the robberies on the “palomos” -youngsters who loiter and breath glue and other drugs- who stake out the area to lift the accessories of autos parked in the various streets virtually at all hours.

Victims scream

“They’ve done everything to me. My car mirrors have been taken four times, all my metal accessories have been stolen and they even broke the rear glass while they were trying to steal it,” said French Rodriguez, who usually parks his vehicle on Espaillat street.

Just leave a tube of glue on your car that way they won't have to steal parts to buy it.

Crime is now so infested as a way of life in the Domincan Republic.
Since its okay for politicians to steal with impunity then its okay for the general population to steal.

This is nothing new ..it has been going on for several years and the culprits are not youngsters but middle aged men .I park my car in the garage at Jose Reyes at night but I have caught redhanded on two occasions men trying to steal my wheel centre piece .On both occasions my neighbours dealt with the men quite harshly , I also have had my mirrors stolen as they are the near and distance variety that seem popular ..There are some restaurants that provide watch men , notably Restaurant Americana and also there is reasonable protection around Plaza Espana .
I think the article identifies the worst trouble spots very well ...most problems seem to be between Malecon and Conde and not higher up ,,,the problem there is often you can not park your car in front of your house whereas you can in other parts of Zona Colonial
I am convinced that very young children are being used by thieves to enter homes and then open doors from the inside for the older thieves

I am to give evidence in two cases in ZC next week and at present there is a group of residents going around ZC getting signatures in relation to a neighbourhood watch system. That may help a lot
