Santo Domingo.- Skirmishes in several parts of the country and the arrest of a retired general have been reported since early Sunday, as millions of Dominicans vote for a president and overseas deputies in the wake of a mostly peaceful political campaign.
The Electoral Police detained Army general (r) Julio Rafael Molina after an argument during which he allegedly brandished a weapon, and ex deputy Reinaldo Rincon was fired on at the corner of the busy avenues Nuñez de Caceres with Mejia Ricart in the sector Las Praderas.
Central Electoral Board president Roberto Rosario said Molina was arrested Saturday night in the bar “Baccus” at downtown intersection Churchill with Sarasota avenues, owned by Rincon.
Molina, together with also retired general and ex Police chief Pedro de Jesus Candelier had threatened, together with other senior retired military, to defend the votes cast for opposition PRD party presidential candidate Hipolito Mejía with, “trained men and weapons” if it were necessary.
Incidents have also been reported in other parts of the country, with only minor injuries thus far.

I had to vote in Hollywood..And I was impressed that from 1200 ppl last election, this year they have 3500 ppl subscribe..
But the feeling that I have is that in Florida and NYC Danilo will win.

Gómez Canaan, son of journalist Guillermo Gomez, had been a victim before when last February droves of police and military also raided the offices of Aeromundo and elsiglo21. His arrest is violation of the electoral law.
This aggression against this journalistic media occurred near noon time. Gómez Canaan came out of an electoral college, when military put him a pistol to his head, to abduct him, leading him to the Central Electoral Board, and from there to the District Prosecutor's Office.
The electoral law establishes the prohibition of arrests during the day of voting, except in cases of flagrante acts.

The Gomez family residence had been raided with a military apparatus involving helicopters flying over the residence. He said then that the authorities sought a "hacking" of the mail of Lady Margarita Cedeño of Fernandez.
Elsiglo21.com found that the so-called "hacking" came from a server of the Dominican Liberation Party, which was admitted by their computer officials at the time.
