SANTO DOMINGO.- The Organization of American States OAS observers delegation (OAS) yesterday announced it will recommend to its headquarters that the next Dominican or ruling party’s President "not have a strong incidence in the electoral processes."

OAS Delegation leader Tabare Vazquez declined however to specify if the suggestion stems from president Leonel Fernandez’s active participation in the ruling PLD party’s electoral campaign. “I’m neither voicing a value judgment, nor making any type of criticism."

Vazquez’s statement calling Sunday’s polls excellent was handed to the press by the OAS delegation in a hotel in the capital. "Upon the closing of the polling places, this mission must say that an excellent civic effort has been fulfilled in this country

Why shouldn't LF have a strong input in the campaign?

After all, HE WILL BE our president for the next four years.

It's NOT against the rules or law of the land to "cut ribbons" as your term in office nears its end.

If Leonel was truly unpopular then these "cutting ribbon" ceremonies would have been scenes of acrimony and extensive negative coverage for the PLD. They provided nothing of the kind and actually served to remind people HOW MUCH LF's Administration had helped many communities across our land.

So the OAS wants to stifle Freedom of speech and expression?

Since when is it illegal, let alone inappropriate, for an outgoing president to continues his duties while still in office, or to support his party's election campaign? Presumably he is still a member of the party and has a right, indeed a duty to support it.

The Hippo had his term as president, so there would not have been any impediment to the PRD capitalizing on his achievements when in office, in their campaign, that is, if he had any.
