Santo Domingo. – A bit more than 29% of the 6.5 million eligible voters didn’t do so in Sunday’s presidential elections, and 4.6 million did, or 70.2%.

The figures show a nearly exact abstention rate as in the 2008 and 2004 elections, but higher than in 2004, with 27%.

With all the votes counted the Central Electoral Board said ruling PLD party candidate Danilo Medina won 2,322,818 votes, or 51.21%, compared with 2,129,880 (46.96%), for his PRD party rival Hipólito Mejía, while the remaining tallies went to the minority parties

I think is an obligation as a citizen to cast your votes..Not a pleasure, not a hobbie..

In USA abstention rate is very high as well.. : 49% in 2000 and 32% in 2004 and 57% in 2008

Them, If something goes wrong and you dont like the goverment.. You can not blame the politicians in power..
You will have to blame on yourself!

This very confusing, does anyone have an explanation for this?

The Dominican Revolutionary Party in the national elections held its position of being the political organization with more voters. It is followed by the Dominican Liberation Party, which won the elections thanks to contributions from its allies.

The numbers presented by the Central Electoral Board indicated that while the PRD increased its vote, the PLD’s was reduced.

A pretty good turnout reflecting the importance placed on the result (to keep the Hippo out).

USA's turnout has been much lower of recent years hovering about or below 55% but peaked for Obama with 68% again reflecting the importance of that election to the electorate. But most americans feel their vote does not matter and the system weighs against them so poor turnouts are the norm of recent.

The recent French presidential election was very high at 80% and again the electorate was motivated to keep/dispose Sarkozy and was open with 4 parties giving good showings in the first round.

The UK turnout at elections has hovered around 65% and 75% peaking at Thatchers time becuase she polarised voters and maybe the paliamentry system makes voters feels they have more say and their vote counts.

Too many voters in democracies don't vote especially where they feel their vote does not matter and that could happen in DR without wider choice and a move away from a developing 2 party sys

This may be because of nearby places for some Dominicans to go and vote. I personally registered to vote but was not able to do so because the consular office that corresponded to me in Philadelphia (1 hr away) was shut down due to irregularities... instead, I had to either go to Paterson, NJ or Washington DC which are about 2.5-3 hours away. Anyhoo, though I am "traditionally" a PRDer, I am glad Danilo won (I would have voted for him as well) as the lesser of two evils. Danilo seems to have more demeaner and looks like a person that would put thought into something before taking actions. Hipolito means well, but is the total opposite in taking actions and saying things and would simply re-inforce and greatly increase the clientism (aka botellas) that the Domincans obtain due to party affiliations.

Victor, it is scummy bigotry for a politician to help one ethnicity over another. They do it in the US, of course, but only because they consider anyone who is not a white male to be inferior. Asking for or accepting that kind of welfare or charity is just confirmation.

@dAVEb
I really disagree. Obama got a huge support from latino comunity because he represent the minority.
He was promising reforms to the immigration process as well ( the biggest issue for latinos), and more help in education , housing and health issue for minorities as well..
He only wanted latinos at the election time.

He wont have the same support in this election for sure.
He was a FRAUD..
I am even thinking voting republican for the first time..

@ohhhvictor

I agree that many of us have been disillusioned during these last 4 years in the US, but truth is, is not all Obama's fault. This has a lot to do with the political warfare in Washington where our politicians won't agree on anything even if it makes sense for the people... just to f^ck each other's party. Though Dems have played that war game game, Reps are at the top and are winning by high margins. I truly believe that what Republicans really wanted was to simply sabotage the government and make Democrats look very bad and somehow make American people forget how bad their rule was under Bush.

I too even thought about voting Republican, but then kicked myself and reminded myself of why the US government has failed to be effective.... as for the republican candidate, Mitt Romney, he is inept to be president. He is a lying scumbag that simply says what people want to hear even if the two statements are contradicting each other at another rally less than 2 hours away.

@lovingit
If Obama REALLY want a reform for immigrants, we would already have it.I think that Bush wasnt very smart, but Obama is way more dishonest with his true feelings.When he really wants something, he really go for it..

I just dont buy that the biggest problem that we have , is because Reps want to sabotage
EVERYTHING.

I am not crazy about Mitt Romney, but I am sure he is not a two face clown like Obama
