Santo Domingo.- Though defeated opposition PRD party ex presidential candidate Hipólito Mejía last night sidestepped an outright concession on ruling PLD party rival Danilo Medina’s win in Sunday’s polls, the self-proclaimed "leader of the opposition" called for the "unity of all Dominicans" to bolster democracy.
Preceded by hours of tension including the police and military placed on alert and rumors of possible disturbances, Mejía said he’ll push for a Law of Political Parties and new electoral legislation.
Throughout his speech of less than five minutes the former candidate implicitly questioned the poll results on alleged abusive use of taxpayers’ money, but also appeared to accept his 52% to 46% defeat.

Another milestone of irresponsibility by el burro Mejía, of not manning up and admitting his defeat.
How lucky we where not to fall in the hands of this inept buffoon, and his hungry, desperate and aggressive crowd of "supporters".
By the way Mr. Burro, you are not the president of the PRD, just the LOSER presidential candidate, if anyone is to provide official PRD opposition is Mr. Vargas Maldonado, not you.

What a despicable character this Hippo Dung. You LOST now move on. His unwillingness to address his defeat in a honorable way is testament that he and his people might seek to undermine Medina's Administration.
Hippo wants some hard money and positions->he has a lot of frustrated backers owed big money.
Even Josean hasn't been paid yet..............LOL

Hipoloco not only mortgaged, hocked and promised away his "future government" posts to entice backers, and the PRD is heavily in debt, he is not only pissed but scared stiff of the consequences.
I hope that this Hipoloco nightmare is over, of a person that has brought so much despair and damage to our country and institutions, making us vote for the less desirable, out of fear of his come back.

Generoso, you are right when you say "hungry, aggressive, desperate crowd" I have a nephew that belong to small group of such crowd in NJ. He told me that they were supporting the Burro because he offered more than the other guy, and they were just waiting for him to win, so that he could get an appartment and money perhaps.
Thank you Lord again for saving us from the PRD once again.

DONT_BE_SILENT,
I know of some stories like yours. The PRD promised checks or "botellas" to several people I know. Whoever supported HipoLoco:
1. Was hoping to get some financial kickbacks
2. It's extremely clueless, beyond rationalization
3. Is a narco trafficker and was hoping for some protection

If the people of the PRD had gone with Mr. Vargas Maldonado they would of had a much better chance, people memories may be short but not short enough to forget the debacle of Mr. Burro past governance to truly give him enough vote to win ..

Surrounded with bad company? How about the old guy with the magoo glasses standing right beside him? Remember him?
He is none other than retired admiral Milo Jimenez, who was minister of armed forces under Balaguer first 12 years, and many say responsible for many executions, including that of national hero, coronel Francisco Caamaño, whom he had shot after he was captured and surrendered in 1973.

why are these guys still a part of the political landscape? time has passed them by. the world is not what it used to be in the 1980s. time for them to get into a rocking chair, on the back porch, telling stories to their grandchildren. the world of today is far too complex for their types of thinking.

The sorry state of DR politicians, with the same old, same old, menu of recycled faces is disgusting.
We have many young and experienced politicians like José Tomas Perez (PLD), Abinader (PRD),
Guillermo Moreno (APD), that could be suitable candidates for 2016, if the old and out of sync are finally put to pasture. This is a decision that the parties will have to make in the next episode of DR elections 2016-2020, if we are still one nation by then, and have not been taken over by the Haitians.

i agree with 'visitor'
hippo clearly accepted defeat in his speech.
of course he's going to say a few words about all the crap the pld pulled
but in the end the they are all the same...purple corrupt thieves and the white corrupt thieves
the fact commentors here actually choose sides or point fingers at one party shows how dominican they are. (in the general sense of blinded by gang mentallity)
....although i do agree hippo is rough around the edges with his tact and verbal skills...
hopefully the poor do have the last laugh....but its not going to be anyone in the purple, blue, red, orange or polkadot parties that will make this happen

The fact that the Hippo managed to get 46% of the vote is a sorry indictment of the Dominican electorate. There was much dissatisfaction with the PLD's administration under Leo, and a belief that he would still call the shots, with Punch and Judy (Danelo and Margareta) as his puppets. This should have translated into a strong showing of the other opposition candidates, but didn't.
Why not?
Perceived self-interest taking precedence over the national interest. How else could such an uneducated buffoon and proven national disaster get almost half the votes of this country?
