Top official: Anonymous from Mexico launched attacks on polls

SANTO DOMINGO.- Central Electoral Board (JCE) president Roberto Rosario met Thursday with hundreds of members of electoral boards across the country to analyze the May 20 elections, where he revealed that the hackers organization Anonymous launched unsuccessful Web attacks from Mexico during the polling.

He said Anonymous’ attacks on the JCE’s platform lasted from 2:49 pm May 20, to 8am May 21, but didn’t disrupt the tallies from the polling places.

Informatics row

Although the official cited the resignation of Informatics administrator Miguel Angel Garcia among the problems the JCE had to deal with on voting day, didn’t link the attacks to the dismissal. "What a surprise he is not here and the elections were conducted in the best manner."

Rosario said though the resignation spurred by the opposition PRD party’s allegation that Garcia was creating a "parallel informatics center" roiled public opinion, an audit by the Organization of American States (OAS) found no irregularities.
