Santo Domingo.- Local authorities and the owners of at least 15 businesses including restaurants charred to ashes in a blaze in the resort stronghold Las Terrenas, Samaná will hold an emergency meeting Monday morning to assess the damages, and the impact which the loss of more than 70 jobs will have in the area.

Vice mayor Mariana Vanderhorst today said many of those ex workers are “crying” on the beach where the blaze swept through the resort towns’ main commercial plaza for tourists called “Pueblo de Pescadores” (fishermen town). “It destroyed all restaurants and discos staring from El Cayuco to the last one called La Sala.”

The official didn’t specify the cause of the fire or whether her municipality is responsible for having a working a fire truck.

So, what's it gonna be?

Fishermen will go back to fishing, to build those little shacks on the beach and sell them for hundreds of thousand to dreaming gringos..

Because no way the different ministries and agencies involved will allow reconstruction of those establishments.

Cool little spot. I hope that they rebuild it fast. Too much cigar smoke from the Euro's is the only down point of LT!

WalterPolo ..can you please remind me but I thought there was a council order for these small shops and restaurants to close ..and that was about 6 months to a year ago ..There are so many good restaurants there that it will be hard to rebuild and compete even if they are permitted which I do not believe they will

First I hope there were no casualties since non is mentioned in the article. I wouldnt be surprised if this is the intentional way of getting rid of the little business on the beachfront, now they will probably replace it with large tourist attraction and leave out the small town feeling of the area. I personally have visited many of the spots in Las Terrenas and met the very friendly owners and staff.

According to the government figures, Las Terrenas is booming, so it couldn't have been a "Jewish Stock take" (insurance job). Considering dangerous miss-handling of cooking-gas, shonky Dominican electrical work "standards", and frequent over-voltages (not as frequent as under-voltage and no voltage) I am surprised there are not more fires.

Are you seriously advocating arson as a proper and correct form of protest for NIMBYs who moved into a tourist area and want everyone else to change for them?

You are an A-Hole!

"You are an A-Hole!"

Why because I support the right to live in peace & quiet?..Because some a-holes like you want to take that away from me!?
Blasting "music"? at all times of the day and night, without regard for someone's peace of mind is what these people do.
There're no controls and no police help in any way, unless they're paid, and even then, the police effort is perfunctory, at best!

These people did this to themselves, simply because, in running a business, they do not adhere to codes and standards, or even common sense!.. luckily, there were no reported fatalities. If they rebuild, we can only hope they do things differently. ....But that would be, un-Dominican!

Another, pardon the pun, Heart Warming Story of PLD "efficency and modernity:"

"Dominican Firemen must cook with wood fire because they do not make enough money to buy LPG"

"They put up with the smoke as they wait to eat or for call to act in an emergency"

May 8, 2012

CANCA La Piedra, Tamboril (Santiago). 'About seven men who work formally in the Fire Department of the municipal district of Canac La Piedra in Tamboril have to go out every day looking for firewood and locate a dry spot in the "Rancheta" Shack where the institution operates, to light a fire and cook their food.

The Fire Department Canca La Piedra has seven men, whose salaries are supplied by the District Board. Additionally, there are 17 volunteers that are not paid.

The Firefighters Canca La Piedra are under the responsibility of the district manager Jose Santana of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), as well as the mayor of Tamboril.

The firefighters, while struggling to get the flames going for cooking, explained that they had been cooking with wood for two weeks, without hope of obtaining a supply of LPG for the stove.

Currently a gallon of LPG sells for RD $ 103.40.

This ritual they repeat every day and more than once, but not by choice, but they do not have money to buy Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), often they have to pay for from their meager wages.

Read the rest and see the pictures at Acento.com
