Santo Domingo.- The powerful truckers union Fenatrado’s threat of halting operations the country’s ports “by force” today and tomorrow has prompted the Dominican Government’s guarantees that those facilities will work unhindered.

Port Security (Cesep) director Luis Lee Ballester said he has all the agents and equipment necessary to guarantee the free transport and commercial activities inside and outside the harbor zones. “We have sufficient response capacity to deal with all threats to Dominican Republic’s harbor system. We have our contingency plan activated to guarantee that things continue as they are.”

Armed Forces minister Joaquin Virgilio Perez also announced a plan to prevent incidents, if the strike materializes with the integration of all intelligence agencies.

He said members of the military Intelligence (J-2), the National Investigations Department (DNI), the National Police, Metropolitan Transit Authority, Customs Intelligence and the Port Authority will work jointly with the Cesep.

"Dozens and dozens of trucks are parked on either side of the access road to the East Haina Port"

"SANTO DOMINGO. – The Stike has paralyzed the entry and withdrawal of goods from all the docks of the country as well as the transportation of fuels, as the majority of tanker trucks have been suspended their deliveries as well."

Hey Foresthill, didn't you know that this are the same people that the government gives them a tax credit on fuel of more than 100 millions gallons per month. and also served as guarantor when for them to purchase trucks, buses and cars that end the government ends up paying it because they never pay it back. One them owes to the state owe bank reservas more than 1.1 billions that the santo domingo major served as guarantor but they failed to pay it back, and now us tax payers have to pay for it. So before you say pay your debt do a little research. These people resale the gasoil, propane gas and gasoline to other people so that they can make a larger profit on it, and if you think that I making this up ask the trucks, cars and buses drivers about it.

bernies,

ASS-uming what you are saying is correct, and thes individuals are breaking the law and not meeting their financial obligations to the Dominican State, then why hasn't Lie-onel Fernandez taken them to court or confiscated their trucks and buses until the debts are satisfied?

He has had 8 consecutive years to address this hasn't he?

Because if Leonel does it, then they will use their political propaganda and start saying that the government is after them because some of Leonel closes it friends wants a piece of the pie. Hubieres is part of them, remember what happen with those lands were the major of santo domingo east kick them out for invating protected area. Well now they are saying that Juan De Los Santos wants to build apartment building in the area. Even Hipolito said on atoday morning Telemicro interview that he was not in favor of the strike because they only one losing were people. They many months to this and also have the giving right to sue the government for unpay debt.

So what you’re saying is that Hippo has more balls than Lie-onel and is willing to criticize those whom people assume are his supporters, even if he loses potential votes.

On the other hand Lie-onel in 8 years has allowed this illegality (according to you) to continue and has not raised one manicured finger to stop it!

In a Banana Republic = The Mob Rules with mafia impunity.

No one has the balls to confront any of these Mafias because where do you start when the biggest Mafia are government politicians that control monopolies just like the Truckers.

The Truckers just want their slice of the country that the Govt hasn't taken for themselves.

It's time for an Arab Spring to start mass demonstrations to show the Govt and all Mafias that the people won't take it anymore and it is time for TRANSPARENCY in the country. All US aid should go to bolster Freedom of the Press and Civil Liberties to support opposition parties.

This country does not need an Arab Spring. Each country where that happened is now controlled by religious fanatics who also line their own pockets. It is human nature.
What makes it so disturbing in the DR is that a voice representing the people can't be a major party candidate.
Can't the government force by monetary penalty these truckers to go back to work?
