Santo Domingo.- U.S. ambassador Raul Yzaguirre said the holdups against U.S. citizens continue near Las Americas Airport (AILA), for which he’ll issue a new and even stronger warning to his compatriots.

He said though the U.S. Embassy’s next step would be to alert US citizens more often, said he expects the situation to be resolved with no need for further warnings.

The diplomat, speaking after heading a donation of computer equipment at the Emergency Operations Center, acknowledged the Police’s arrest of suspects near the AILA, charged with holding up and pursuing travelers who had exited the airport.

On its website the U.S. Embassy recently warned its citizens that highway robbers were operating out of the AILA.

As a US citizen I applaud this warning from the ambassador to the Dominican authorities, but as a Dominican born I feel is a shame that a foreigner has to do this to protect his compatriots, when it is actually the responsibility of any country to protect its citizens, and visitors. SMH.

Mr. Ambassador,

You are asking too much of a Failed Narco State that Steals Elections and can’t even prevent cables from being stolen from a major bridge in broad daylight putting at risk the life oh hundreds of commuters daily.

Wires to cables
cars to airplanes
carts of aluminum to trucks full of metals
branches to avalanches

when was the last news report of someone getting mugged on Kennedy ave?
now days is Discotecas. (Afika) Banks, ATMs

If no one stood up in 2004 when billions and billions were stolen on all aspects of the country no one is going to do jack now because a few tourist are targeted. this guy is just seeking attention...

Go ahead Mr. Ambassador and issue a stiffer warning, it is the only way that the DR authorities will wake up and do something about it.
A few years ago the road to the airport from Santo Domingo to Las Americas, was built out of cement and with time the cement had compacted and solidified, providing a very slick and slippery surface that was extremely dangerous when it rained, and caused a lot of accidents. Until a well known general's son killed himself, in route to the airport they did not proceed to fix this problem and repave the road.

Had the overhead electricity cable to my house and all other houses in the neighbourhood stolen the other night during a blackout.

Almost laughable....a new administration needs to kick ass and sort some of these generals and captains into doing some serious work or retire

What do you expect people to do?. In a country that is making millionaire of political officials from the wealth of the country and allowing for anyone who support such corruption to have and do the same. What is left for the rest of the country?. The main increase in criminal activities come from two sources, the first is the high unemployment that leave many with no source of income and with more free time to just wonder on how its going to survive or feed itself and its family. The second is no moral examples to fallowed, when they see someone living in a tin house and suddenly within a couple of years after being appointed to some post or participating with or connected to some official, this person now has something close to a mansion with a couple of SUV park in the drive way. The message given is that to live well you must steal. The consequences are not important just don't get caught. Its the same attitude with the laws in the U.S., break the laws but don't get caught.

The Dominican government will do everything within its power to catch these people soon and put an end to it until some other group or individual takes its place. This is an area that they don't want to be label as a country that does not provide security for its tourists and visitors. A greater part of the economic depends on tourism. My question then is, this things has happen in the past and they always catch the robbers. How come this ambassador wants to make it more than what it is? He knows that the Dominican authority will not let this to continued and that they acted on it without delays. Does this ambassador has anything better to do?

I note that there seems to be no other embassy who is making such comments and I am wondering if the ambassador is , now, being an alarmist . Firstly , the gangs have been found and arrested and I am confident that the small percentage of Americans that have been robbed will be even smaller from now ,Secondly the chances of being held up in daylight hours or even up to 10 pm , when there is much traffic on las Americas is next to zero and according to police reports the targets have been Dominicans returning to their homes .
Finally , if anyone is at all worried , then they can arrive in day hours or just spend the night at the quality hotel .
This is the third warning that I have read from the embassy in recent months about personal security in the DR and I always feel much safer here than I do in New York or Houston or in Chicago where I am constantly worried about being mugged ..but we all know that we must be street wise in the USA without any warnings from an embassy

Americans are , in general, scared to go to many different places because they think that everyone hates them so much ..that is a legacy of the two Bushes with their very aggressive foreign policies ..they are , as evidenced by their security at their airports and for planes and ships leaving elsewhere for the USA now paying for years of aggressiveness outside their own territiries ..No other country in the world lives in such fear of terrorist attacks ... makes our dear little DR seem a very relaxed place to live in .

There is no justice system in this country so what does anyone expect? The biggest criminals are the people put in charge.

The US should put some armed military in the country and make them look like easy targets. When the criminals follow them from the airport just kill them all off.

After a while they will get the idea and it will stop.

VeronicaDR I fully agree with you. My family including 2 small children were robbed 2 weeks ago next to Villa Altegracia. They caught them this weekend near San Pedro and killed two of them. As per Police statement one of the killed was the leader. YOU GOT IT !!! The possible link to PN was liquidated. If nothing change this country will become another Columbia or Mexico. It is corrupt up till the highest rankings.
Vivacuba I suggested at my embassy in similar wordings, let some Dutch marines from Curacao (Dutch Antlles) come over to help to restore Law and Order and to get rid of this criminals who try to destroy this country. Justice in the Dominican Republic is an unknown word.

The USA should send in the Department of Homeland Security like they have inside America. It would be much safer here and after all, the usa does run the place and calls the shots. The DHS is already in Punta Cana. Send them to Santo Domingo. Come and protect us from the terrorists. We will all feel much safer like the Americans do.

hputters ,,I was driving to la Romana on saturday and I have never seen so many armed military men before from el peaje to la Romana and this was well after the Predident and his cavelcade of a 15 large SUVs had passed by ..I guess they were looking for various people as cars and all gua guas were stopped and inspected .
I thought at the time the Queen travels in England in a Range Rover with only two security cars and the Chancelor of the Exchequer goes from his home to Parliament House on his bicycle and yetthe President here travels as if there is going to be an armed attack by a whole brigade . I do not like that road around Villa Altigracia ..I consider that has more problems than las Americas ,,glad that hputters and family were not hurt .

When people say there is no justice here , they are totally wrong and like wise when they it is lawless .. I have been writing recently that I have been in el Palacio de justicia en SD at least 6 times recently as well as the officina de fiscal and I have been chatting with many people and observing what is happening as well as observing what happens at the police stations in la Romana and San Pedro ,,I am convinced and a few lawyers who are good friends tell me that the laws and systems are all there but it is the people who are the problems.
For example in a court case , maybe a lawyer does not appear , or the truck with the prisoner is delayed or a military man who has written a report does not show up ..so the case is postponed , sometimes many times , until all the players appear .At times one prosecutor handles all the cases for theday and has little understanding of the details and then , after a postponement ,another prosecutor may appear .The courts never start on time.

Now at the police stations , in the late morning , some police put on their bullet proof vests and then others do in the late afternoon and they go in pairs on a motor bike, fully armed , looking for men that they know are habitual criminals , robberies or killings etc and then often police justice takes place instead of justice in the courts . I believe the police are as frustrated with the courts and the lawyers as much as the normal people are .The police are paid a pittance and so demand money from the public under any small pretence ,,So there is a desperate need to pay the police well and get the courts acting efficiently ..that should be number one priority for Danilo
