I think ,from my oen obsrevations that this a true statement ..I do not know what is in the basket to determine the price comparisons but in my basket I put all the basics of living and the only thing that I think has gone up very significently is the bill at decent restaurants ,,they have gone up sharply ...but my bus fare has gone down 10 pesos and the price of fruit and vegetables is down and wine and whisky , the basis of my diet have also gone down ,,except for Australian wine ,,So at least this a litlle bit of good news to offset the disgraceful overspending by the government last year and in the first quater this year ,,They should be penalises a percentage of their salary for every million over budget.

Aologies, Ricky, for the increase in the price of Australian wine, but it's not my fault. It is probably due to the Aussie Dollar going so high above the Green-back. Your price should drop a bit since it is now just below par. Cheers!

I don't know what the significance is of the picture of the cocao pods. Does the Dominican Republic make chocolate, of just export the cocoa then import Hershey bars from the USA? Typical!

A lot of it has to do with the time of year to include the spring harvest of fruits and veggies that flood the market and the freezing of fuel prices coinciding with the economic benefits of the election campaign.

"They should be penalises a percentage of their salary for every million over budget."

Right on the money.. Ric.

All are being payed a bounce for just turning up to work but not actually doing anything is the norm here.
Performance based pay... Do a good job, come in on or under budget with the job done well, then you get payed...would be a good start...

Chocolate sales worldwide defy recession
January 1, 2010

Chocolate sales around the world have increased despite the recession, according to new research from Mintel.

In China and the Ukraine - two countries not necessarily noted for chocolate consumption - Mintel reports chocolate confectionery sales rose 18% and 12% respectively in 2009. Each country has seen steady sales increases since 2005 and Mintel predicts continued growth through 2013.

Other countries have also seen chocolate bars, bags and boxes flying off the shelves, albeit at lower rates.

The UK chocolate market grew by 5.9% last year, while Americans purchased 2.6% more chocolate than in 2008. Sales in Argentina rose 1.8% in 2009, while in Belgium sales increased by 3.2%.

“It’s clear that despite economic trouble this year, the world’s chocolate lovers didn’t deviate from their favorite treat,” said Marcia Mogelonsky, global food and drink analyst at Mintel.

“Chocolate is a small, affordable indulgence

HERSEY IS DOING OK WITH OR WITH OUT DR SALES OF ITS PRODUCT WORLD WIDE. 18 BILLION IN SALES!!!

According to Packaged Facts, the United States market for chocolate is forcasted to reach an overwhelming $18 billion by the year 2011.
It is quite amazing how much chocolate the citizens of the United States actually eat. But can you blame them? Walking into a grocery store, one can not help to miss the candy aisle, and if perhaps they fight the urge and walk by it, they are once again caught looking at all the chocolates at the checkout lanes waiting to be bought and eaten. And there is such a variety. Peanut Butter cups, Twix, Butter Fingers, Kit Kat's, Hershey's Chocolates, Godiva, Kinder, Take 5, and so many more. According to the U.S. Market for Chocolate, sales of chocolate soared to a record $16 billion in 2006 though sales will still increase much more as the demand will increase.

You do realize that it is speculation that causes prices to drop as much as it causes it to rise....don't ya?

Sure Mr Hershey may be "crying all the way to the bank" (along with the McDonald brothers) but when it comes to chocolate, no one comes close the the Belgians or Swiss - and unlike the Dominican Republic, can't grow cocoa. However they have innovation and ingenuity (I don't think these words translate in to Dominican Spanish).

I met a couple of Swiss hikers on Pico Duarte. They knew more about the mountain, the region, the country, the flora, fauna and history, than their specialist Dominican guide. Typical!

I'll take a Ghirardelli Chocolate over any over sugared European Nestle bar any day

Technically, Ghirardelli Chocolate is Swiss, since it was taken over by the Swiss chocolate company, Lindt, in 1998. I have not tried it, but from what I have read, I think the 86% cacao (Midnight Reverie) would be excellent. Although Swiss, I would not consider Nestle in the same class as Lindt, perhaps because it is primarily a milk products company.

and compared to Godiva and other super premiums Lindt is mediocre

Looks like I'll be evaluating a few more chocolate manufacturers - tough job but someone's gotta do it.
