Santo Domingo.- Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) director Jose Sanz Jiminian said thus far this year its agents have slapped more than 700,000 fines on motorists and impounded around 700 vehicles.

The announcement comes in the heels of mounting traffic accidents blamed mostly on motorists who run the red light.

The official said the vehicles of motorists stopped for running a red light and other serious moving violations are towed to the old dog track Canodromo, on the Monumental highway.

He said however that Traffic Law 241 is obsolete and should be amended to include penalties for public vehicle drivers who don’t use seat belts, as all other drivers are obliged to do.

Sanz went to Congress and met with the Chamber of Deputies Transit Commission to request Law 241’s amendment.

actually, running red lights is an everyday practice, because it really has no serious deterrents, other than the little matter of possible bodily harm. the AMET boys will just as soon take 500 pesos to act as though it did not happen. when there is a computerized system, and you get points on your license, people will get the message. when you accumulate 9 points, and your insurance rates double, maybe something will sink in.

When the simplest of road rules aren't enforced why would these moron that run red light stop...

Start a campaign of impounding ALL unroadworthy cars, trucks, buses and motorbikes... Enforce all road and parking rules and this number will fall... This is no time to be complacent and wait for things to change or just hope people to change their ways...
Yes amend the rules, but more over... ENFORCE THEM...

THIS GUY IS ONE VERY RICH MAN BUT HES GOT MANY YEARS FOR HIS STUPID ACTS.
Updated at 4:30 p.m. ET: A Florida judge on Friday sentenced Polo Club founder John Goodman to 16 years in prison on DUI murder charges, after rejecting a bid to have the guilty verdict thrown out due to a juror’s at-home drinking experiment during the trial.

“He left to try and save himself,” West Palm Beach Judge Jeffrey Colbath said of the 48-year-old Goodman’s decision to flee after causing the February 2010 crash that killed 23-year-old Scott Wilson.

Colbath acknowledged that Goodman was “extremely intoxicated at the time,” but said that he should have known better than to leave the crash scene without rendering aid to Wilson, who drowned after his vehicle was hurled by the force of the crash into a canal.
THIS IS WHAT THE DR NEEDS SEND THEM TO LONG JAIL TERMS AND THIS BULL WILL STOP OR AT LEAST SLOW THEM DOWN.

The rest of the city is Doomsville.

in every modern country, you periodically have to take your car to an authorized inspection station, and have it tested for roadworthiness. if the brakes are no good, and it has no lights, no horn, and spews clouds of carbon particulates, it will not get a certificate of fitness. without that document, you cannot legally operate it on a public highway or byway. in the DR, no such thing exists. you just pay something like 25 pesos, and you get the sticker to affix to the windshield. no wonder one sees such really interesting vehicles on the roads here.

They can pass all the laws they want. Until the Police are paid a living wage, that they want to maintain, there will be no enforcement.

Is this public car
A. Stopping
B. Turning left
C. Turning right
D. About to have a conversation with someone walking on the road
E. None of the above because he has broken down and isn't going to get of the way of the traffic

The Dominican mindset at its best, kind of remind me of the poor white trash from west Virginia with 3 teeths left in his mouth who despise the black man simply because he is no better than him and therefore sees him as a threat( but will not admit to it) yet feel superior to him because he thinks he benefit from white privilege, never mind his living conditions. At least he feels he can say he is not a n$&g$&r

danny00,
asks
"Sink in to what?"
I was wondering myself.

"700,000 fines on motorists and impounded around 700 vehicles."
Does anyone here believe this? Dominicspin - add a few zeros.

Take all the unroadworthy trucks, cars and motorbikes of the roads? Won't need traffic lights or cops then.

Run a red light in Melbourne and your car is sensed, 2 photos automatically taken, your registration plate read by computer software, a traffic infringement notice and a fine generated, points deducted and automatically posted to your registered address. Lose all your points and you lose your license. Drive unregistered or unlicensed and you will be picked up by random cameras and prosecuted.

Despite having much faster roads, more vehicles and significantly greater distances traveled, the road fatality rate per 100,000 population is a tiny fraction of that in the Dominican Republic, where driving is like negotiating a mine-field in a war-zone, while under heavy fire.

The traffic problem is a complicated one. Bad vehicles, uneducated drivers, no enforcement! Hell where do you start? It has to be on all fronts at once in my opinion!

The traffic problem in DR is horrendous.
Several friends, a young child, 19 yr. old twin sisters and two young men all were killed when a truck tried to pass moving into on coming traffic.

The problem isn't just running red lights or making taxi drivers wear seat belts or faulty vehicles on the road or police officers getting a bribe to ignore the violation.
All of the above need to be vigorously addressed and corrected.

I also see the problem as the need for some people to speed.
Where in the hell are they rushing to, we're on an island.
There is no way they can come to a stop quickly.
The road from Gaspar Hernandez to Puerto Plata is like the Florida Daytona 500.
Especially at night, they are speeding in and out of traffic.

The majority of accidents I see appear to be caused by someone speeding.
The penalties for serious traffic violations should be upgraded to criminal violations.
Especially when the action results in injury or death.
