SANTO DOMINGO.- The Metropolitan Transit Authority (AMET) retained 350 light and heavy vehicles on the Duarte highway, where drivers were charged with various traffic violations, including no insurance, no license and speeding.
The vehicles were taken to the impound yard at La Cumbre, on the Duarte Highway, until their owners pay fines and comply with the law.
The operation comes less than 60 days when president elect Danilo Medina is expected to make sweeping changes in the cabinet and other senior government posts staring August 16.
AMET director Jose Sanz Jiminian listed heavy vehicles using the passing lane, missing lights and other motorists running the red light among the infractions, for which offenders must pay up to RD$1,600.
He said agents have retained more than 700 vehicles since Friday, adding that the operation will continue "unchanged" nationwide, to reduce traffic fatalities.

Now if this could just happen 24/7 year in year out and to ALL that brake the rules no matter the offense..
Then all that is needed is to stiffen the fines for trying to bribe your way out of paying the fine by both giving and those taking bribes...

Maybe just maybe ther will be some sanity on the road.

You have to ask yourself, "Why now?"
What is the reason that these laws have never been enforced and suddenly they are?

Josean, you are such a cynic... cant see any good in anything the PLD do, or find a way to twist it to suit your own warped bias....
About time some basic safety laws were enforced, for the safety of the rest . Things like driving without all (and sometimes any) lights is criminally dangerous

This is probably just for an increase in personal revenue for the officers. They're too lazy to chase the dangerous drivers down in the city, right?

You absolutely right Mr. Shortstop!
The PLD is Criminal Corporate Enterprise that is destroying what little good was left of Dominican Society to only benefit the Mobsters congregated in their Political Committee of which Lie-onel Fernandez is the Don!

Last week we posted some severe complaints regarding the criminality on the roads and highways.
Resulting in innocent people loosing their lives.
I would like to believe the messages we posted were sent from DT to AMET director Jose Sanz Jiminian.
Personally I don't care which party is in power, they're all the same, just different colors.
The bigger problem is making government agencies do their jobs.
The responsibility of government is to protect and serve not get rich at everyones expense.
I am very pleased to see AMET cracking down on offenders.
I hope this will continue throughout the country.

@ cheyenneasanti; while I could not agree with you more, the question still remains, why now? Why having such push as we face a change of command? This could be viewed as a last ditch effort to generate revenues prior to moving out. Shall this continue within the parameters of the law, I am 100% behind it. Unfortunately, our country has been so corrupted for so long, that this effort may appear to be another ploy. Unless AMET agents have been newly indoctrinated on proper and lawful practices, there is no guarantee this is any different than previous shake-down operations for. A law abiding citizent may be driving a nice car but some corrupted cop may see the potential of getting money by inpounding his/her car, even if rules have been broken. While on active duty in the US Military and visiting my beautiful country, I got pulled over many times just to be asked for money; several times within a mile. Conversely, some sepeeding Dominican officials are no even waved down.
