Santo Domingo.- Metropolitan Transit Authority (AMET) cops have ticketed more than 7,000 motorists in greater Santo Domingo in the last 10 days for running the red light, affirmed its director Jose Sanz Jiminian on Tuesday.

In a statement, Sanz said the record summons come in the heels of fines levied against 350 drivers of heavy vehicles and red light violations last weekend, and 197 more on Monday.

AMET spokesman Jose Jaquez said it’s imperative to stiffen Traffic Law 241 against violators and warned that the vehicles seized will be released only to the registered owners, registration and license in hand, and will have also heard attend a two-hour “awareness” lecture.

The cops fines drivers for using cell phones, not wearing a seat belt, throwing trash on the roads, for crossing the pedestrian markers, no license, uninsured, speeding, among others.

This is not about educating the population on the importance of obeying the traffic laws, this about getting as much money as possible from motorist. It is well known that not only do traffic lights suffer from black-out but also that many drivers can't afford the documentations that a driver must have. Before a government throws its dogs at the population it must first make affordable the means so that people in general will be able to present the proper documentations and follow the rules of the road. I assure you that if an official or the son or daughter, or so and so violates any of the above mention they will be the exception to the rules. The government wants money for the same reasons they raised the price to the basic food necessities. AMET was created by none other then the present President Leonerito......and they are well armed or didn't you know that.........

They forgot to mention the most commonly fined offense, gringos driving without carrying their identification. As the cop was writing out my ticket, he noticed my wife with her white coat and stethoscope. When she confirmed she was a doctor, the cop advised they don't fine doctors, lawyers or other cops, and tore up the ticket.

"Santo Domingo.- Metropolitan Transit Authority (AMET) cops have ticketed more than 7,000 motorists in greater Santo Domingo in the last 10 days for running the red light,"

"For running the red light" (I am sure this just a funky translation)

Where might this red light be, because for the most part I see the Amet officers seeking shade under a tree. Just think if they enforced the law at all traffic lights , that is if the lights are working.

And what about at night? it is like a free for all and drive at your own risk...
