Santo Domingo.- Immigration director José Ricardo Taveras on Tuesday said the Inter- American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) doesn’t have jurisdiction when it comes to matters of sovereignty, such as nationality or immigration, for which in his view the country should withdraw as a member of the hemispheric tribunal.

"If it were up to me, the Dominican Republic wouldn’t form part of that court; what we ought to do is denounce this Treaty because the attitude it’s taking is honestly questionable," the official said.

He acknowledged however that the Dominican judicial system should’ve prosecuted the case of the “massacre of Guayubín" which occurred in 2000, for which the Dominican Government is before the IACHR today.

Six Haitians and one Dominican were killed when soldiers who fired on the vehicle they were traveling in the town of Guayubin, north-western Montecristi province, after failing to stop at a military checkpoint.

The official noted that Venezuela has recently pulled out of the IACHR, Colombia has warned it could do the same and Argentina and even the host country Costa Rica have questioned that court’s attitude.

"When it issues a ruling on nationality despite that international public law doesn’t allow an international court to judge matters on the issue of nationality or immigration because they are the sovereignty reserved to the states, and it overreaches its jurisdiction and convict the Dominican Republic, I think they are out of line,” he said.

The official spoke during the signing of agreements with the Dominican Agribusiness Board (JAD) and the Housing Builders and Promoters Association (Acoprovi), aimed at regulating the unknown number of Haitians working in companies affiliated with the Social Security System.

Well said carajo!
The ONG's, Jesuits, et all, are trying to abuse the DR's reputation, (once more) for a case that does not qualify to be tried in international jurisdiction, as far I know the DR is a sovereign nation, coño!
The Haitians are better treated in DR than in Haiti, according to Haitian diplomats, "as the rest of the world treat them like stray dogs", and I quote the Haitian ambassador to the DR.

There are so many countries that think they are a sovereign state and they find out that because they have joined various groups they have lost much of their independence ..like Britain,,where a European court demanded that prisoners be given the right to vote in Britain ....which has been against the law for centuries

Josean what does your comment about "Lieonel" have to do with the topic of this article. We are discussing the international court meddling in our nation's domestic affairs. How is this a partisan issue. Other than your insults to fellow Dominicans of different party affiliation, you usually make intelligent comments. What's up?

venganzaderafael,

Lie-onel and his PURPLE CLAPPING Chorus here at DT love all things international and become orgasmic every time we sign some insignificant agreement with some foreign entity or organization as the ultimate testament to modernity and his “walking on water statesmanship!”

Many of these BS entanglements are for the local consumption of the untutored and easily impressionable mob, via media constructed events.

However, now that the Chickens of these ill throughout self-aggrandizing media spectacles on behalf of Lie-onel, “Have Come Home to Roost!”

…..the same ones who applauded blinding without reading the fine print have their underwear all tied up in a knots because of the consequences.

What Hypocrites or at best, ignoramuses they are!

I see. That is a complicated thought. Do we join in the community of nations and thus relinquish a degree of autonomy, or do we resign our membership and guarantee our cultural, linguistic, ethnic, and religious survival?

What say you all?
