BONAO.- The miner Falconbridge Dominicana SA (Falcondo) on Wednesday said its Loma Miranda water management and runoff controls will avert harm to the environment, and that the company’s existence for the next 20 years will depend on that project.
External Affairs manager Jose Luis Lopez said Falcondo "has been holding a dialogue with all our stakeholders to hear their concerns and respond to each of them."
"In every conversation we’ve expressed concern about the mining operation’s impacts on Loma Miranda could have on the river and other tributaries of the Jagüey," he said.
He said all studies conducted by independent companies such as Golder Associates and Environmental Resources Management show that there’ll be no impact on the river. "And a hydrometric station in the community Acapulco was just now opened for the community to monitor the quality and quantity of water before we start to operate."
Lopez, quoted by elnacional.com.do, said it was important to stress that the operation doesn’t involve the use of cyanide, chemicals or explosives, and no risk of exposure to sulphides. "We firmly believe that our activity doesn’t affect the Jagüey River and we’re ready and willing to share our research and continue the dialogue with anyone who’s interested in our operation."

With the aquifers tainted with fecal matter and the sludge from the mines soon we will have to import water

All mining these days disturbs the environment ..gone , many years ago, are the small tunnels that you see Indiana Jones climbing through and which were used to extract various minerals and jems. Now there is heavy machinary , masses of earth moving , pollution caused by the trucks and the work and disruption of lives .
You only have to look at all mining around the world.Australia, Africa, USA. India and China to see that the environment is changed by mining and it is most unpleasant living near mining . .
I do not know the scale of this mine but if Falconbridge are involved , then it must be large ,and here we have by their own admission that controls will be necessary to avert damaging the environment .
If I were the residents I would make sure all these controls were in place before any mining or other infrastructure commenced and and would insist that weekly inspections be made by the residents to ensure maintenance of the controls ..penalty for breach ..closure

you are all over the place on this subject ,,,firstly we , the people living here now ,are custodians of the environment for future generations so there is a need and a responsibility to act responsibly.
secondly , if the government are the wrong people to protect the environment as you suggest , then it needs to be done privately .

Let's see what do you make up to JUSTIFY this good for nothing corporation
From: Dominican Republic
@airgordo,
First, you cannot believe anything reported in papers that are often one-sided and false, especially here in the DR. Many writers are on dope and report rumours rather than facts.
Second, technology makes old mine taillings attractive and that is why Barrick bought this place.
Third, Pacer had this mine and they took very little if any considerations for the environment. Their tailling ponds remain, apart from many messes left over from that era of gold boom for the DR governement.
Four, Barrick's mine is not even producing gold yet and has never dumped anything anywhere.
Five, they follow Canadian environmental standards which are some of the highest in the world. They meet and beat by large any environmental laws here! Hell, they even have a reclamation plan to return the mine to the jungle when finished. Do you even know what that is?
Six, please do your homework before you start yapping non-sense about something you know absolutely nothing about.
From: Dominican Republic
Last, in their deal to operate a new mine here to process the taillings, Barrick has made a deal with the Govt to clean-up the mess left over by Pacer a.k.a the DR govt.
Oh, and there is absolutely, positively, and certainly 0 = ZERO discharge or chance of discharge from any of the taillings from this new mine and new technology because everything is contained and recycled!
You are obviously anti-anything that puts food on the table of dominicans. They are here for the next 35-40 years. Good show of support for something you are clueless about!

Cachetero,
I can't see barrick not extracting gold when there is a time frame. They anticipate mining what they put in monetary then the republic wreaks benefits. So, you're tell us that they are just cleaning-up after someone else before making any profit...... I'm only asking.
From: Dominican Republic
I was curious and looked at the picture.... This was taken just following the heavy run-offs from one of our last heavy rains. This picture is by the cotui lake in Maimon where the Yuna reaches the lake. This color reflects the high iron ore conternt of the valley; the oxidation of iron in the water and "rusted iron sediments", giving it the red color. This occurs regularly and naturally there due to the terrain from which this river comes from.... And, locals do know about this event after heavy rains. Come and dig there and you will find red dirt from the high iron ore concentration. It has absolutely nothing to do with the mine! and the Yuna is not even near it. It looks ugly, but it is a naturally occuring phenomenon that may be aggravated by all the farming and de-forestation too close to the river banks.
You will not die from this and you will get your daily dose of iron vitamin!
Always read between the lines!
From: United States, FREEPORT, Long Island.... ((You're blind to the fact that you're blind))
Okay..... Mighty nice of them....I'm sure we are getting the short end of the stick, if they are willing to maintain and maintenance the area affected for 40yrs.

@RJ
Thanks for asking...
They will clean up when the current operation kicks off and production starts. The processed taillings will be used to cap the old mess and prevent natural leaching. The whole thing will be re-forested right on top. And, production is not set to commence until sometime in October. They are still in construction. They are constantly inspected for environmental compliance by many national and international environmental bodies. It is far from mining in the 50s.
From: Dominican Republic
All these deals are 50/50 Wins for the company and also the Govts involved! They pull profits out of these deals because they are good at it. The cleaning is not immediate.... It will be part of the reclamation process.
The people in the surrounding communities are seing great economic benefits from this. And more will come when production actually starts. Of course some people are always asking to be instant millionaires, because of their Trujlio sense of entitlement.
Do not forget that there is also 3 other mines operating in the immediate area.
From: United States, FREEPORT, Long Island.... ((You're blind to the fact that you're blind))
Good enough catchetero. I'm still going to be optimistic about all of this....at the end of the day I'm interested only in the benefits to the republic.

YOU have NO IDEA of anything related to the F@CKING barrick GOLD or you are a Paid Employee, YOU CHOOSE, that is the ONLY explanation to all the NONSENSE ridiculous statements you are posting here.
1- the picture is NOT from any media, it wa sposted by Musician ChiChi Peralta two days ago, and the Red thing there is NOT iron, is the HEAVY metals and CYANIDE Pollution that Barrick Gold should have ALREADY CLEANNED from Rosario Dominicana YEARS ago, the Barrick DID NOT come to DR yesterday they have already been her FOR YEARS.
2- 50/50 is a BIG FAT LIE, The contract states that the goverment will get about 3% , NOT 50% like you wrote, and that is AFTER all the "investment" has been paid off WITH DOMINiCAN GOLD
3- The CLEAN UP will also be paid WITH MY GOLD by the Dominican Goverment, the cost of cleanning is DIVIDED on the contract so don't keep posting that kind of Sh!t where people that actually know about this thing can read it!!

Mining will never be pretty! The world needs the resources to grow. The difference between open and close pit mining is that in closed pits your saw very little disturbances and the mess was hiden and later burried under ground. Messier because heavy metals and chemicals could leach right in the water table. Open pit mining is right in your face and it is ugly for the time the mine operates, but all leaching and chemicals are contained into solid holding ponds that will not leak, where the water is cleaned, treated and re-used in the process. When they are done, most companies in most developped countries have to provide "reclamation plans" to govts. to return the area to nature. It has been done quite succesfully in Canada and many other countries. However, these plans may be skimmed and affected by lack of national environmental standards and by corruption.
Cheers,
C.

Dominicans beware of interests that seek to extract your wealth in exchange for much soon-to-be worthless paper currency. There's a lot of misinformation here on how great Falconbridge will turn deserts into oasis while making a profit at the same time. If it sounds too good to be true...
1. Falconbridge is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Xstrata (a Swiss-based mining conglomerate).
2. Research Peru and the mining industry there. Specifically Tintaya mine where Xstrata-Falconbridge are causing lowly peasants to rather die and continue seen its livestock being poisoned by mining effluence.
The peasants are labeled "extremists" for not allowing the poisoning to continue.
This happened in May 2012 but has been ongoing since at least 10yrs.
3. In 2003, after more than 10yrs of denial, Xstrata admitted its chrome mines in Kroondal in South Africa were responsible for polluting the Sandspruit waterway.
