Santo Domingo.- San Cristobal senator Tommy Galan, one of president elect Danilo Medina’s closest collaborators, yesterday said if the electricity sector still depends on the US$1.0 billion annual subsidy is because the major advances announced by the State owned power utility (CDEEE) aren’t real, but "pure bull" instead.

Galan’s criticism stems from the Executive Branch’s recent Budget request that the Senate include US$500.0 million allocation to energy production, which had already been assigned US$265.0 million.

The Senate Budget Committee member noted that if the CEO of the CDEEE Celso Marranzini’s affirmations on improvements such as cutting costs, collections, and fewer technical losses are true, then there should be, by financial logic, reduced subsidies. But “no one has seen this reduction.”

The lawmaker’s surprising criticism of Marranzini is also against president Leonel Fernandez’s energy policy, and signals the first rift between the outgoing Administration and Medina.

"We see that we’ve increased the CDEE’s subsidy or at least maintaining the levels of previous years. They may argue that it’s the price of a barrel of oil. But the situation on oil has been dragged since 2008. And this year hasn’t been the most expensive for fuel purchase," said the ruling PLD party lawmaker.

This is just grandstanding ,,,everyone here with eyes can see that electricity is provided regularly to those areas where people pay and there is no interference with meters ,,but in poorer areas and some industrial areas where there is electricity theft then power is erratic ..If everyone paid for what they used there would be no problems,,but that will never be the case here .

This little deep sh*t should bow down to Celso instead of bashing him. He has done more as head of the energy department in the past year than then rest have done combined in the past 25 years.

so why we still owe that sector a billion dollars? He didn't do crap! All he was doing was prolonging the process for Leo to make a dash for the hills.

RobertoJose, I'll give you pass this time just because you are from Freeport :). I grew up in Freeport btw.

But let's put it this way, At the time Celso took over the energy department the whole damn system was in shambles. The guy has done a great deal in a short time. We can't ask for a hail mary on this one. He needs time and money to put in place a long term fix.

Monies more than anything else, he should be making a mockery of leo until payment is made, harass the government for being deadbeats. This place is in shambles because the administration of it and monies is being dumped into it without any positive returns . How can anyone be happy with this. The dominican republic is bleeding to death.

I see everyone that leo appointed a position as chess pieces for the current admin and once leo leaves office a good majority will step aside.

We all have different opinions.

Although I am usually very critical of Celco Maranzini, and of the work the CDEEE is doing via its subsidiaries, this is a bit too far. He may not have done all he could have done, I strongly doubt there would be anyone in the country who can do a better job. Certainly not Tony Galan.
I am still of the opinion that a businessman should not be in charge of an Electricity, gas or water-provider, as these essential comodities should be provided without profit, at cost-prices.

Electricity in DR should be privatized. You want to steal electricity then the entire neighborhood suffers. Very quickly the thieves would be handed over so everyone that wants electricity and will pay can have service. This is the only way to do it.

NYGuy35:
You are absolutely correct By doing so turn it over to France convert it to 'NUCLEAR 'energy to supply DR & HAITI, have them maintain it and pay tax instead of this dam subsidies. How do you think ISRAEL gets its energy? Nuclear, since they have no one to sell them oil.
