SANTO DOMINGO.- During the first four months this year 66 women died from domestic violence, seven cases fewer than the same 2011 period, with 73.
Of the 66, 35 were among couples, while the remaining 31 occurred during holdups, brawls, rapes, and accidents, as reported by the Justice Ministry’s Statistics Dept.
There were 18 violent deaths of women since January, 11in February, 18 in March and 19 in April. The report lists the most femicides in Santo Domingo province, with 18 cases, followed by Santiago with 7, San Cristobal with 5, and Puerto Plata and Sanchez Ramirez both with 4.
During the same 2011 period, 20 femicides were reported in January, 24 in February, 13 in March and 16 in April. That year 230 women were killed in violent deaths.
Of those the report lists 200 were Dominican nationals, 25 Haitian, and one each were Cuban, German, Italian, Venezuelan and Swiss.

A new study says Asian Americans have overtaken Hispanics as the largest group of new immigrants arriving in the United States each year.
The report released Tuesday by a U.S.-based think tank, the Pew Research Center, also found that Asian Americans are the “highest-income, best-educated and fastest growing racial group in the United States.”

Absolute correct, Ricky. However with the possible exception of Islamic countries, everyone is appalled by violence against women, even if insignificant compared to violence against men.
I note the figures include accidents and hold-ups. Australia has a very broad definition of Domestic Violence, but not that broad. Thrown in to bolster the emotional impact?

So sad, as a Haitian women I can only pray for the people of dr, and hope as a whole that the sexualization of women becomes more obsolete. I know that with the struggle of income in many countries crime becomes more prevelent against women.

What? Males being violent towards - and in some cases killing - women, and all that can be concluded is that it's safer to be female? Surely I can die now as I'm certain I've heard it all. This comment section is getting less funny and more vulgar by the week.
I'm not blind enough to recognize that the report says nothing about how many of these women were killed or injured at the hands of other women - and the number may be more than one would anticipate - but it does not take a true 'man' to put his hands on a woman in anger for any reason, just a cowardly and insecure male. And there is a difference.

This Islam-bashing is the typical stuff you get these days in online forums. We have been conditioned by sound bytes and news briefs. We don't have the time for introspective thought and analysis. We take what the mainstream media feeds us as gospel truth. There are 45+ nations with pre-dominant Muslim population. In a handful of these nations there are backward tribal customs/norms that have nothing to do with Islam but everything to do with local culture that pre-dates the people's conversion to Islam. However whenever these idiots are caught partaking in this ignorance its sensationalized in headlines of the biased media. Similarly while pedophilia has nothing to do with Catholicism, media bias has conditioned us to suspect that this perversion is more common in the Church than it actually is.
