Jobs in the DR are hard to find or low paying because the labor laws are not work at will. If you can fire an employee without a long process and not have to pay the Christmas bonus maybe more corporations will hire people. Fix the laws!

Danny and Josean hate this both. I was born a very poor Dominican and went to public school to get High School diploma going to schools on Sunday because it was my day off and when I got that done. I started looking for jobs on my own and move out my single mother house. I got a job as a construction labor and did that for about 2 years until I got a job cleaning a discotec. Well to make a long story short I stayed in my course and many of friend used to called me Pendejo, because I didn't go out to expend my hard earned on booze on the weekend, Well now I earn about 6000.00USD per mont working as a real estate broker. There is opportunities in this country you just have to work hard and be honest and someone will give you hand to help get off the ground and be someone. So please stop blaming the government because a bunch people chose it to go out on the weekends expend their money instead of going to school to become someone.

Precisely my erudite brother!
Dread the issue of the MERTO for me is not about its cost effectiveness or lack thereof, it has always been about the timing or rather giving it priority over EDUCATION.
Every day as we see the Social Anarchy multiplying like a virus in DR we see that METRO over EDUCATION was and is the true PINHEAD idea!
From: United States
actually, josean, all i am saying is that because i might not be a fan of Hugo Boss cologne does not mean i like body odor.
From: United States
actually, josean, one of the reasons why there is such a pressing need for solutions like the metro, is because of decades of a lack of planning. the metro has now emerged as a band aid for a problem which will continue, necessitating more and more metros. look at some facts. the DR has 9.7 million people. 3 million live in Santo Domingo. that is the equivalent of New York City, with 100 million people. that is 6 times the size of Bombay, India. it does not take much imagination to conceive the ungovernability of such an area, and the problems which arise from putting so many people into so small a space. unemployment, homelessness, crime, pollution, insanitary conditions, overcrowding, and anarchy. why has this happened, you ask? neglect of the rural areas, as exemplified by the metro expenditure. instead of trying to cure the problem, it is putting yet one more band aid on it. it is like giving someone a gallon of whiskey for breakfast, then treating him for liver disease.
From: United States
the government should have used this money to upgrade rural areas, with electrification, internet connectivity, and cutting edge education ideas, uplifting the living standards of rural people. make the playing field a little more level, and people will not leave their families, their homes, and their lifestyle in El Limon to go drive a carrito in Santo Domingo. they do not go to the cities because they like them. they go because their villages have nothing, and they are ignored, and they cannot get financing to pay for agricultural startups, and they cannot use the internet to research the latest techniques and technologies, and expose their products to a larger market beyond Valverde Mao. it is called planning, and vision. moving people from one place to another, via the metro, is MOTION. upgrading villages is ACTION. do not mistake one for the other.
From: United States
i watch artists, and woodcarvers, lugging their work to resort areas, trying to sell them to tourists. yes, they do sell a few pieces, every now and again. however, some firefighter from Dubuque, Iowa, is not here to buy art. he is not a collector. he has no idea of what fine art is. he wants to come to the caribbean, on an all expense paid vacation, eat as much as he can, get sunburnt to look like a lobster, drink the night away, and puke into the flower pots. real collectors, who can recognize art, and talent, are on the INTERNET. people need mechanisms by which they can expose their offerings to people in Paris, and Rome, and Santiago, Chile, and Banff, Canada, all at the same time. international exposure, rather than walking on some beachfront malecon , pestering drunken tourists. with rural electrification, and internet connectivity, Dona Maria can show her embroidered quilt to the wealthy Mrs Freedman in Long Island , NY. that is planning...not the metro.
From: Dominican Republic
dreadlocks,
If I may, the urban drift to cities is not a new phenomenon. The reasons for this migration range from the loss of farm jobs to the lure of economic opportunities in the city. Now, we could argue that the reason for the lack of farm jobs is not because of the lack of investment, but due to the investment itself. Basically, jobs that were done manually, are now being mechanized, processes that were done manually are being automated. Now in Dominican Rep., I do not know how much would this apply. I don't think we have a problem producing food. We pretty much produce much of what we consume. It may be that the investments are not enough for their potential, but at the same time, I don't think this is the cause for the heavy migration to cities like Santo Domingo.

Arcangel, the reason for urban drift is a simple one...lack of opportunities in the rural areas. i understand the niceties of the Lewis Model dual sector economic theory, in that industrialization, especially at a time when it was still labor intensive, attracted many urban people to the cities, because the marginal product of labor in manufacturing was greater than the marginal product of labor in agriculture. the reason is that
1..there is a fixed supply of land
2..there is a surplus of unskilled rural labor
adding more agriculture to land will not improve the marginal productivity of labor, because, after a certain point, the law of diminishing marginal productivity will have run its course. the only way to arrest urban drift is to improve opportunities, and economic, and educational, and social outcomes in the rural areas. if people could make 20 dollars per day working in some field in Haiti, you would not find a Haitian in the DR.

are you saying that the farmers in Idaho, who have electricity, and internet, and a decent standard of living, live in cities?
From: Dominican Republic
Dread,
I actually lived for a brief period in the midwest of USA. Back then, access to the internet was mostly via dialup. Broadband access was expensive, or not provided by Telcos, for farmers because of the distance between farms. I remember driving for at least an hour between two farms in Wyoming and Nebraska. (Television was mainly via air waves and/or satellite). But I digress, cities like Cheyenne, WY and/or Rapid City, SD is were the farmers found everything that they needed (shopping, entertainment, etc) and served as anchors for the population drift. Some more succesful than others.
From: United States
arcangel, if we do not make an effort to include the rural population in the country in the development process, and only look to the cities, such top down thinking will destroy the economy.

even uneducated people have the right to ride the choo choo train. dont they?
what i dont understand is this, if so many have no jobs or work in the dr where is the choo choo train going to take them?
let me join the list of people that like the metro.

where with a good education behine them they will earn hugh amounts of money and be also able to shop at place like the blue mall.
Jobs in the DR are hard to find or low paying because the labor laws are not work at will. If you can fire an employee without a long process and not have to pay the Christmas bonus maybe more corporations will hire people. Fix the laws!

Hummm...Quality of life vs Education. I guess I must agree with you on this one. Without "quality of life" the investment in education could lead to the brain drain (human capital flight) of our society, and without education, quality of life could be hard to achieve....Should governments favor one over the other??

one day they made up their mine to put their money into education."
Not so fast danny00!! Did you forget that Norway was one of the beneficiary of the Marshall Plan after the WWII. That Norway approximately received 400 million dollars from 1948 to 1952, That Norway has been exporting oil and gas since the 70's. "Norway is the fifth largest oil exporter and third largest gas exporter in the world"....
Well tell that to your "Honorable" Senate President Reinaldo Pared Pérez
that just threw Narco-Lie-onel Under the Purple Bus Driven by Danilo Medina:

actually, you can be against something, without being for something else. not because i do not like the metro means i like traffic jams. it simply means that i believe that there are better ways to get people around, and to reduce congestion. i might not like the idea of nuclear powered electricity , but that does not mean i like darkness.
