New York. - Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez called on the Dominican community to vote en masse this weekend to elect Adriano Espaillat to the U.S. Congress in Tuesday’s Democratic primary. "This is a historic moment where Espaillat will become the third Latino and first Dominican congressman to represent the city of New York."
"And I believe that in the same way we celebrate with pride when the Puerto Rican Sonia Sotomayor was elected to the Supreme Court, Barack Obama became the first African American elected to the United States presidency, it will also be of great pride for the Dominican community to elect our first to the Congress of this nation. "
The District 10 councilman said the elections are a matter of pride, via which patriots send a message that our numbers in this city of around one million people, should translate into greater political power as the way to empower our people. "The Dominican community should feel very proud that the leaders of all Dominican political parties, even with differences ahead of the election of May 20, are today united to give this win to the Latino and Dominican community."
Rodriguez stressed Espaillat’s representativeness for the remapped Congressional District 13, which includes parts of Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood in Manhattan, and Kingsbridge in the Bronx. "The number of Dominican voters in this district, with the support they’ll receive from the Anglo Afro-American, and Asian communities and other Latino brothers and sisters, will be sufficient for this election process to culminate in Adrian Espaillat’s win, which is the victory of our community."

"Espaillat will become the third Latino"
Wrong; brother Espaillat would be the fourth Latino:
1. Herman Badillo
2. José Enrique Serrano
3. Nydia Velazquez
Good Luck Adriano!

When the Dominicans in NYC speak English and Spanish, they should have a Dominican represent them in congress. There are Dominicans here that believe they do not have to speak English and become American but want all the benefits of the American welfare and legal system.
Do we really want Dominican politicians? Just look at how the Dominican Republic is run!

What an incredibly RACIST statement. All those who vote for him should be ashamed.

The Dominicans in NYC are represented. They have a big PLD office here and during the election the public schools in the Bx and the heights were purple and gold. Charlie champions for benefits and govt aid Dominicans take advantage of. Dominicans here ven have their own clinic on 168 that fills out forms for Medicaid for the people that don't speak or read English. But they know the word Medicaid.

People should always consider the candidate that they feel can best further the causes and agendas that are most important to the voter. Such motivation should be above all other reasons for consideration but there is absolutely nothing wrong with acknowledging milestones that mark the progression of groups that were not long ago considered implausible to hold positions of political importance. I'm sure that there are people who will vote for Mr. Espaillat and Obama because of ethnic affiliation but there are also people that will vote against them for the opposite reason, however, anthonyc will feel no compulsion to speak out against them. He will also not speak out against Cubans who have mobilized and voted for their own ethnic representative candidates en masse so long as they are anti-Castro, ever since they arrived on American shores. But to anthonyc, hipocrisy and irony are dancers who work at the local strip club, preferably Cuban owned.

Hey Devin
I have never voted for anyone just because he is Cuban.
In fact I have financially supported candidates who were up against Cubans because I put their politics above all other things. Robert Menendez of N.J. Is a vial loathsome creature who I have refused to shake hands with. He is the exact type of Cuban that if his parents had stayed in Cuba would be standing behind Raul cupping his Balls.
I can rattle off more names of Cuban Politicians that would never get my support.
Race, Creed, Gender, ethnicity never is part of my decision making when it comes to politics....
NEVER.

Hey anthonyc,
I don't doubt your response one bit, I can easily believe that YOU have never voted for a political candidate because of anything other than your stance on the issues. That is not however, what I accused YOU of. My criticism of your initial claims is that you go on record demonizing Dominicans of voting for a Dominican just because he is Dominican and yet every single ethnic group in diverse ethnic centers have done the same exact thing. Including, Anglos, Irish, Jews, Italians, Afro-Americans and yes Cubans. So, to single out Dominicans for doing the same exact thing that every ethnic majority and minority has done, including the members of your own ethic community, is DISINGENUOUS. Only, and only when I took you to task on your hypocritical stance, did you become critical of some political figures of your community. Just like you, there are Dominicans who won't vote for Espaillat just because he is Dominican, or do you consider your "altruism" a monopolized virtue?

I am singling out Dominicans because the story is about supporting a candidate because he is Dominican and this is a Website about Dominican news.
The really funny part is that he lost the election to Charles Rangel. Talk about being in a district of mooching idiots.
