Santo Domingo.- After visiting dozens of bars and other business that sell and alcoholic beverages, including numerous “drinks,” the National Police warned their owners they’ll face drastic measures if they continue to create havoc among residents, with noise, loud music, cars parked on the sidewalks and lewd behaviour contrary to good customs.

"We’ve issued a warning for this situation to be corrected, otherwise we’ll conductd a second visit to confiscate all those things that tend to disturb public order, such as radios, speakers, chairs and anything which tends to cause unrest" said Police general Neivis Perez.

Interior and Police minister Jose Ramon Fadul yesterday ordered five Colonial Zone bars shuttered for 20 days, for as repeat offenders which violated the law and affecting area residents.

Fadul’s decision came after hearing complaints from representatives of Colonial Zone neighborhood boards, churches and the National District Attorney's Office and even some bar owners, in a meeting held in his offices.

The closed bars are "Miloka," on "Cacibajagua," both on 1 Sanchez St.; "Le Studio Loungue" and "Mojiganga" both the Mercedes, and the disco "Encuentro Artesanal," on the Meriño.

Private property rights be damned.

We know better how you should run your life.

The bars mentioned are small and really very seldom are there people in them ,,,they are so far from the main problem that it suggests that there is some other agenda. By far the worst offending bar is in Jose Reyes , a blue building where many drink on the street and block traffic

It's the only way to get the them, a-holes, to understand reason. If they continue the racket, shutter them permanently. Sometimes, a show of force is what it takes to convey the message: We will not tolerate your breaking the law, any further!!

Now, let's do something about the parking situation; ban motorized vehicles, and turn most of ZC into a pedestrian mall..!

I didn't know there were any laws in the DR restricting noise ... many cars in Santiago are simply mobile boom-boxes.

There is indeed the law from the secretary of environment from 2006 which regulates the noise polution. The problem is that this law is not enforced often but it is a very transparent and clear law.

Great job of the authorities. These bar owners think they own the whole district just because they want to do business. Imagine if every business owner would ocupy the street and the walk way and install speakers making promotion. This is the chaos these people are used to and the way they make business. Only a firm authority like the one in Santo Domingo can bring the order back to the city so that the citizens can live a normal life without being molested continiously by these agressors.

Ricardolito,

If the traffic was so bad then the people wouldn't go there? Logic dictates that the traffic isn't that "bad" then.

As for the Noise.......When has the ZC ever been quiet? Unless you moved in there over 100 years ago you have no legitimate expectation of serenity,

All one has to do is spend 5 minutes in the ZC and realize it is for tourists and fun seekers. The only people complaining are the same types who move next to an airport and then complain about the noise....

Or....Want their Cut.

All the traffic offenders are young people who do not care about blocking the roads and so preventing residents to pass or park ..
The total number of offending discos or bars is no more than 10 ,,most of the bars that have been targeted and shut down for a short time are very small . The simple answer is to build two car parks but that seems to be too easy a solution .
You are totally wrong about ZC , anthonyC. By far the greatest number of people coming into ZC are Dominicans and there are so many outstanding restaurants that the zone would be far better off without the large discos ,,,they are more suited for Axe Venezuela where they also have problems with people and cars blocking the street .

Ricardolito,

Lets just set aside your total lack of respect for the right of the individual.

Again I must point out that nobody alive has ever experienced a ZC that didn't have traffic or noise.

I never said that the majority of visitors to the ZC weren't Dominicans. I said Tourists AND FUNSEEKERS.

The Solution to the parking is painfully obvious. Start towing away all those who block the road. The Businesses will have to build their own parking garages to survive...See? The Free Market IS THE SOLUTION!

the problem with this law is that its not enforce entirly or in a far manner.you have clubs in the capitol that stay open till 4 am almost everyday.or on selected days.en santiago also.and in sosua and punta cana de sta open till 3 and 4 am everyday.how can u tell one bar owner he has to close at 1am on a thursday but the other guy can stay open till 4am.the problem isis that the small bar owners don't have the money the big club owners have to pay off the poilce(cobra) and the politicans as well as the fines.

"Businesses will have to build their own parking garages to survive..."

Where will they build it? The best solution is to ban traffic altogether. A huge parking lot can be built outside of ZC and have a trolley or horse-drawn carriages to shuttle people around!
