Santo Domingo.- Police chief Jose A. Polanco on Thursday announced the start of patrols with eight vehicles equipped with communications and security cameras to confront the assaults of travelers who exit the country’s airports.
Polanco said the precautionary measure also responds to U.S. ambassador Raul Yzaguirre’s complaint of the frequent robberies against travelers near Las Americas International Airport (AILA). The US State Dept. had also issued travelers’ warning on the rising assaults.
He said the first phase will be eight units of vehicles assigned to the airports AILA, La Isabela, Luperon, Maria Montez, Catey, and Arroyo Barril, Samana, Punta Cana, La Romana and Cibao.
He said the airports will be patrolled 24-7 with two police agents per car, equipped with communication with access to the entire police phone central.
Polanco said to improve safety for local and foreign tourists the vehicles will patrol the Colonial Zone and the area around Juan Carlos overpass, Santo Domingo East.

8 patrol cars and 10 airports listed. Why in the hell patrol Barahona airport, or Puerto Plata's Luperon or La Isabela? That's a helluva stretch.
Just target AILA, the capitol's roads, that's where the assaults originate. Again though,
a reactive response instead of a proactive response when the assaults began a few
years ago. Better than nothing I guess.

Why would we believe that these government employees aren't just going to engage in the same kind of robbery and assault? DR cops engage in every other activity to illegitimately get money from the public.

Hope they don't appoint the same patrols that allowed the airport perimeter fencing to be taken down and stolen

Great more corrupt criminals looking to rob everyone. Try setting up sting operations like civilized societies do.Problem is even if or when these criminals are caught with no justice system none of this even matters they will probably pay or know someone and just walk away like most other hardcore criminals.

What is the biggest economic resource DR have?
It is tourism.
If the tourism goes the investors will go.
No tourism, no investors, no money.
This isn't calculus.
Of course the tourist have to be protected or they won't return.
You don't believe me, ask Mexico, Columbia, Jamaica, Guyana and Haiti how they are doing with the decline of tourism.
Until there is something to replace tourism we must protect the tourist.
This is just my humble opinion.

What a pittiful, shameless system. So much money made is tourism and they only 8 cars to pratol the areas mentioned above.

8 does not go into 10 well. Agree they should work the AILA in Sto. Domingo first. All 8 of them
