Santo Domingo.- GoldQuest mining company president Julio Espaillat said the southwestern Hondo Valle community of Las Tres Palmas forms part of San Juan province, not Elias Piña, and denied media reports it discovered gold and copper.

"The only true thing is the finding of 400,000 ounces of gold which I have reported in other occasions in the previously cited places," the executive said and reiterated his previous statements on ongoing searches at Las Tres Palmas, located within Jose del Carmen Ramirez National Park.

Quoted by hoy.com.do, Espaillat said the 400,000 ounces of gold are within two square kilometers, a proportion he affirms is too small to feasibly exploit.

He said the fact that Hondo Valle’s surveys report some 231 meters 2.42 grams-per-ton of gold and 0.44% copper, "is only interpreted as an area of much interest, but by no means a mineral deposit exists as has been reported."

"I insist that this is only considered a good indication. In no way can we speak of a deposit or mineral deposit because they are terms reserved for when you know the volume and the mineral resource," added Espaillat.

The Mining Agency issued GoldQuest the concession to exploit Las Tres Palmas on November 2005, which covers Hondo Valle, Los Tomates, La Escandalosa and La Higuera, all within the National Park.

I suspect this is nothing more than a smoke screen to defend against other speculators encroaching into sites the company views as potential. It can be seen as: a delicate advice to the government to back off issuing permits to competitors licking their chops to gain access to immediate areas to the sites; a cloaked warning to other players to back off as it is not worth the while.

You are right. The last thing the D.R. needs is a strong and growing industry and well paying jobs.

Yes we can all welcome a big hole in the ground, poisoning rivers and aquifers, displacing more flora/fauna, making it impossible for agriculture and ranching, etc. All for the benefit of a very few, at the expence of the greater good.

Give it a rest Ron. It is Private mining companies that is cleaning up the mess that was created by the Dominican Government.

The idea that all gold mines poison the environment is an insult to anyone with average or above intelligence let alone being a BOLD FACE LIE!!!!!!

We get it. You hate Gold Mining. You hate progress. You would rather have people die than disturb the flight path of a mosquito. Go bang mother Gaia and stop telling other people what they can do with their own property.

If it is progress we are after. Where is it after gold mining for the past 500 years in Hispaniola,

first by the Spaniards, when they could not find any more they moved to Peru and Mexico to find

some more. What am saying ,if gold brings progress what happened to DR ?

When it comes to mining there is not such thing as private mining with out the gvt getting involved

one way or another, or are they there to get their share and send it to Sweetzerland and retire with

the proseed.

"Mining is like a search-and-destroy mission. "
Stewart Udall -

You may be right, Mr. Anthony. ..I am the consummate environmentalist with a radical stance on anything that disturbs our mountains and forests.. I just can't stand to view from above, the great gashes that strip mining causes our Mother Earth...
She nurtures us, she cares and protect us, yet we use, abuse and misuse the greatest of all gifts:
a world in which to live, grow, prosper, and evolve.
When our greed and stupidity takes us to the brink of extinction, it wont be because our Mother did not give us every opportunity to prosper and survive; It will be because we, humans, are our own worst enemies.....Bank on that!

"We have met the enemy, and he is us!"
