Santo Domingo.- The United States warned its citizens traveling to Dominican Republic on increasing robberies of visitors entering the country through Las Americas Airport.

On its Website the State Department says criminals impersonating police arrest travelers along several roads after leaving the airport, where they are assaulted at gunpoint in their vehicles and their valuables stolen. "In some cases, travelers who stay in private homes rather than hotels are followed to where they’ll stay and robbed as they enter the premises."

The State Department also notes that "while no U.S. citizens have been killed during these robberies, the U.S. Embassy has received reports of several injuries."

It adds that such incidents have occurred at night, either in private vehicles or taxis. "It’s unclear how the victims are spotted within the terminal. U.S. citizens arriving at Las Americas Airport should take the necessary precautions, or consider scheduling arrival times during daylight hours."

It's not just tourists, it's everyone that's a potential target for these criminals. Don't know how or who could help stem these assaults, certainly not the police since they seem to be the ones committing these horrid crimes!
Medina must do something. He has to put together a special squad of real police regulars who'll do the job of protecting the public. If not, one way or another, the country will lose, big time.

I plan to travel there sometime in mid July throught SDQ, but will make sure my daughter and I catch a daytime flight and have my brother pick us up. We have two devil cousins who will escort us home in a separate vehicle. They have guns.
Whatever future travels will be done in and out of POP.

There is some one inside the airport who targets the victim then alerts the bandits outside. Airport officials must do their due diligence and perform a better job on who they hire just like they hopefully do anywhere around the world. I can almost bet there are people working right now who have an extensive criminal background and yet are allowed to run freely

great comment. we need more people like u.
so if u listen to this guy and his thoughts then only the mafia and low-lifes should travel to the dr.
just in case he has no knowleage of this
most people on this planet are not in the mafia nor gangs {facts out by the government only about 10% of the population are the gangs and mafia members] as i said many times in the past tourists and ivnestors are treated as "prey in the dr"
yes they also rob dominicans and if they had the chance they would rob thier own mothers. low-lifes that they are.

hope they hit the cruise ships when they are in town so this way as in 1971 all cruise ships that where coming to the dr ports cancelled any stops over to this island.
all the islands are ful of crime today in st. thomas all the shops need to close before it gets dark
puerto rico had to call out their national guard to protect its tourists and own citizens.
wake up get a real police force and army and a real government then these problems will go away real fast.

MAYOR'S MESSAGE
October 14, 1997

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Combating Gangs and Drugs with Law Enforcement,
Intervention, and Education
by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On October 8, I announced a new strategy to combat the growing problem of street gang violence. Even though New York City does not have the same severe street gang problem as many other American cities, it's important that we deal with this now, before it gets any larger.

The new strategies build on the coordinated street-gang crackdown initiated more than a year ago by Police Commissioner Safir. Equally important, they focus on enhancing preventative education among children and strengthening legislation in order to protect New Yorkers from the indiscriminate acts of violence perpetrated by criminal gangs.

WHILE YOUR AT GETING A REAL POLICE FORCE AND ARMY AND A NEW REAL GOVERNMENT U KNOW ONE THATS FOR THE PEOPL MAYBE U NEED TO GET SOME NEW AND REAL JUDGES WHO SIT ON THE BEANCH IN THE COURTSS IN THE DR?
U REMEMBER?
At the start of the year San Cristobal Sentencing judge Francisco Mejia Angomas ruled to release three convicts in a druG trafficking case, arguing that he “presumed” that the number “10” on the conviction meant ten days, and not the ten years dictated by the court. He is currently undergoing a disciplinary trial by the Supreme Court.

i once loved santo domingo when i first went there in 1985. i lived there 10 years. now i say with sadness that the country is a failed state. sure the banqueros mundiales and their world businesses like ikea chase, citibank and the dominican mafia elite like the vicinis, corripios, leones have raped it.now it's darkness and confusion and dangerous.

seems like they will not let me post the real numbers on homicies in the dr for last year but they are high and u if u want to see what your living with on line and get the numbers u might be real upset when u find the numbers.
u might need to put more bars on your doors and windows.
watch your kids and your self when going out {night time is the worst.}

This has been an ongoing issue for decades and is nothing but an escalation from stealing from your luggage as it went through "aduanas", to what it is today. Dominican officials will do nothing about it unless these type allegations are made on official websites on other countries affecting tourism in DR; which is a real shame. How many Dominicans are robbed, injured or even killed on a daily basis and through the same process in not just Las Americas, for all other ports of entry into the country? There have been news reports police officers and a woman committing similar assaults on local travelers in the northern area of the island. Some of these crimes are committed in cahoots with sworn police and military officers. Who are we to trust when traveling in such beautiful country when those sworn to serve and protect are directly or indirectly involved in the same committed crimes. I recall once being pulled over just to shake me for money until I identified myself as a serviceman

The Embassy should explain that it is the Island Welcome Committee to remind you that you are now in a lawless Banana Republic and you should be on a chartered Bus with all the other tourists on your way to a Resort Prison with security guards every 20 feet, where you should remain and eat quantities of god awful tasteless buffets and drink endless amounts of cheap rum until you throw up and then never return again ! La República Dominicana es inagotable (frustración) !

The tourist and Dominicans who live abroad are the $$$ providers who feed the tourist industry in DR. If the tourist industry had any BALLS they would have a sit down yesterday with the government to discuss this problem. This is the time of the year when people will travel to DR to visit families etc, and yet the authorities know this and don't do enough to protect the traveler. True it's been happening for years but now the crooks are going hardcore and that I believe is very bad business and reputation for DR.

It's a F%^#n joke that authorities can't police an Island the size of DR.

Maybe DR should needs to be invaded (lets see the result for the oil search). Since all of government authorites will never protect the people it governs. They are all just a bunch of loose chickens crying foul and pointing fingers at everyone.

@Guillermone, I don't doubt that, I remember when I went back to visit the first time, a guy approached me in the luggage claim bathroom and tried to bribe me by offering me to get my luggage quicker if I gave him $20 dollars, this was after the immigration officials at the entry booth told me they like gifts. I went back a second time and the same thing happened, I haven't been back ever since.

There are always tons of people standing there when you exit the airport. Its probably some of them. Also could be the taxi drivers who are in on the scam. Cant wait for my one way trip out of here.
