Higuey, Dominican Republic.- Two of the 26 French tourists injured Thursday night when a bus collided with a sugar cane train are in critical condition today in the Cedano clinic, which reported that five were treated and released

The accident on the Central Romana train crossing at the Higuey -Yuma highway killed three French tourists returning to the Bavaro-Punta Cana region, from a day excursion at the coastal town Bayahibe.

French consul Mariehlene Papi today several clinics to visit the injured, from the crash that killed two men and a woman whose identities the authorities have yet to provide.

The driver was probably : (a) speeding, (b) on a cell phone, (c) failed to stop at the crossing or (d)
all the above.

I have a video that I made on the autopista between the airport and La Romana. On it you can see the driver speeding along, passing cars and trucks while at the same time counting the monies that were collected. These murderers, and that is what most of them are, potentially, never stop talking on the phone or watching the movies that are being shown. It's a wonder that more people aren't killed.

They should have headed the warnings on the USA government website - go directly to your all-inclusive resort and stay behind the high razor-wire topped walls until you leave. This country has too many killers on the roads, on motorbikes, on foot or on drugs.
Maybe when the last foreign tourist leaves, Dominican politicians will do something about lawlessness and losing the country's biggest cash-cow that provides for their luxurious, extravagant lifestyle - but probably not. They will just join the exodus.

Ricky,
The Coral Highway will not solve anything unless Dominican drivers and riders are excluded.

Roy...stop being an alarmist. Ricky is correct that the new highway will improve (lessen) incidents.

Out of curiosity...when what the LAST tours bus crash in this area??? 2008...same stretch of road...but for totally different reasons. Not what I would call a trend, given the number of tour buses that ply that route. The road itself is an accident. It is not built to handle the traffic nor vehicles that it does.

The drivers and the "owners" can do no wrong. The only way to end this plague of reckless driving culture is for the government to get some balls and remove the bad drivers and fine the companies. However this will not come to pass as the government will take a passive aggressive footing, saying si si si for all the corrective measures needed and then do nothing about it.

It is only when the traveling public starts boycotting the services will there be hopefully any improvement. There should be a day when the public should have a huelga general against transport. Dream on zooma !!!!!

Roads do not cause accidents. Drivers should drive to suit the prevailing conditions. That is, how they are, not how they could or should be. Bad drivers still have accidents even on perfect freeways and highways. Good drivers don't, even on terrible roads.

Mike ..there have been 2 o3 in the past few years ..the worst was near the bridge over Rio Chavon and then there was another near the corner to Bayahibe ,,,many people died in both .
On this occasion , that crossing where there is a small comado and then over the railway the short cut to by pass Higuey normally has slow traffic and you have to reduce the speed as the road is not so good across the lines ..I just heard the driver was simply trying to beat the train .
Funny they call these trains , maquinas en la Romana do not know why
