San Juan, PR.– Officers and special agents assigned to the Caribbean Corridor Strike Force arrested six Dominicans trying to introduce 330 kilograms of cocaine and one kilogram of heroin with an estimated street value of $8 million into the United States.

Following an investigation led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the six individuals were arrested earlier this week. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers onboard a marine surveillance vessel detected the six men aboard a suspicious 25-foot unmarked fiberglass boat transiting illegally towards Puerto Rico.

"Through these arrests and seizures we are sending a clear message Puerto Rico will not be a safe haven for criminals looking to ship drugs into Puerto Rico and the United States," said Angel Melendez, acting special agent in charge of HSI San Juan.

The detainees are Jairo Torres-Balbuena, 29; José Manuel Rodríguez, 30; Anheli Regalado, 25; Berner Balbuena-Perreaux, 38; Jorge King, 52; and Juan Polanco-Rodríguez, 35. The 15 bales of suspected contraband later tested positive for cocaine and heroin during a field test.

By The Associated Press

NEW YORK - (AP) -- Three men found shot to death in a BMW on a quiet Manhattan street might have been involved in stealing from drug dealers and were hit in retaliation, police said Friday.

The car was parked across from the Manhattan School of Music and near a building owned by Columbia University on a stretch with little foot traffic when a passer-by came upon the bloody scene at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Heriberto Suazo, 26, was in the front seat, slumped against the window, his white T-shirt soaked in blood. Amaury Rodriguez, 30, was behind the wheel, and Luis Catalan, 25, was in the backseat. All the men were shot in the head, and Catalan was also hit in the chest.

Police spokesman Paul Browne said the gunman was believed to have been sitting in the backseat with Catalan when the car stopped, and he fired,

Anyone who believes that DR drives this business is full of BS. The USA is wise to target the connection rich ports and air links in Puerto Rico. The HUGE Drug markets of the USA and Europe are sourced via Puerto Rico! So it pays great dividends to stop the source that flows from South America into the Caribbean at its crucial linkage hub: Puerto Rico.

arrested six DOMINICANS. however, it is not the Dominicans´fault for being involved. like everything else. NO ES MI CULPA. it is those terrible Americans, with their insatiable appetite for drugs. the poor Dominicans are just collateral victims, to have and hear Atabey tell it, the Dominicans just happened to mysteriously materialize into the mix, having nothing to do with drugs. as we all know, it is only people like Jamaicans who are involved in caribbean drug smuggling. 114 nabbed in La Perla drug bust

THE DAILY SUN STAFF

A federal grand jury indicted 114 people Wednesday on charges of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute illegal and controlled drugs.

Early Wednesday morning more than 400 federal and state law enforcement officials swarmed the streets and alleys of the La Perla ward, a century-old community at the foot of the wall in Old San Juan. Operation Old World was the culmination of a one-and-a-half year investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Puerto Rico Justice Department and Police, and other federal law enforcement agencies.

“These indictments are related to a drug trafficking organization operating in La Perla Ward and headed by Jorge Gómez González, a.k.a. ‘Cara de Truck’ (Truck Face), a well-known community leader in La Perla,” said U.S. District Attorney Rosa Emilia R

U.S. District Attorney Rosa Emilia Rodríguez.

According to Rodríguez, drug trafficking in La Perla, was controlled by the Martínez and Serrano families, who had been operating their criminal enterprise since 1998.

The two families apparently had agreed on the mechanisms to “distribute and supply controlled substances within La Perla.”

“They controlled all drug trafficking, especially heroine, in La Perla,” said Rodríguez, who affirmed most of the heroin distributed in Puerto Rico comes out of La Perla.

Nevertheless, the scope of the trafficking operation included other illegal drugs and extended beyond La Perla, according to the D.A. The defendants are being charged in a nine-count indictment with conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute heroin, cocaine, marijuana, oxycodone (“Percocet”) and alprazolam (“Xanax”).

“This violent organization was supplying and selling drugs not only to the people in La Perla but to people living in different municipalities, children and tourists,” said Rodríguez.

Rodríguez said the co-conspirators participated in the criminal endeavor as leaders (“bichotes”) (17), drug point owners or “magnates” (16), and enforcers, suppliers, runners and sellers, among other roles. Most of the indicted had more than one specific role in the operation.
Rodríguez also explained at least 30 of them possessed and used firearms to protect themselves, the drugs and the drug trafficking organization.

“We estimate the profit of this criminal organization to be some $5 million a year,” she added, who also estimated heroin sales between two and three kilos every two days.

The criminal leaders would allegedly “give out samples” of their products to heroin and cocaine customers for them to “test the quality of the drug and promote the sale of the product.” Bulk sales would take place in the drug owners’ homes or on “Wipao” (Wipe-out), a sector on La Perla’s waterfront.

Sellers not born or raised in La Perla, were not allowed to sell their drugs beyond la Bóveda, the arched entrance/exit on the old city wall that gives access to La Perla from Norzagaray Street.
“They (the unauthorized sellers) could not go beyond a yellow line painted on the street just beyond the Bóveda. If they stepped over the line they were disciplined,” explained Rodríguez.
Most of these rules were established by Gómez González, who was identified by Assistant U.S. Attorney George A. Massuco as “one of the most powerful leaders in La Perla since 1998.”

According to the federal investigation, Gómez González was part of the drug trafficking organization in La Perla since its inception in 1998.

“It was him, along with other drug owners, who established the rules, for instance the yellow line,” said Massuco.

There were other rules that sellers had to follow in order to continue selling (their drugs), such as a rule of exclusiveness that prevented a seller from selling drugs from a “bichote” other than his own. These rules presumably established a sense of order and kept the peace in La Perla.
For several years, Gómez González had been very active in dealing with different situations affecting the centuries-old community. As a matter of fact, more than once he served as a kind of liaison between the municipal government and the community in matters regarding services and infrastructure development.

During election campaigns Gómez González would allegedly sponsor the visit of political candidates to La Perla.

“We have information confirming that whenever politicos would visit La Perla, drug owners, including Gómez González, instructed the boys selling (drugs) when they had to clear out of the street because politicians shouldn’t witness what was happening there,”said Massucco.
The federal indictment includes a series of forfeiture allegations in cash and properties located in and outside La Perla.

“The narcotics forfeiture allegation includes $20 million in cash and 50 properties located in La Perla,” said Money Laundering and Forfeiture Unit chief Miryam Fernández.

The money laundering indictment includes a forfeiture allegation for six other properties located in Toa Baja, but according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement director Roberto Escobar, other properties may be included in the allegation because the investigation is ongoing. If convicted, the defendants face a minimum of 10 years to life imprisonment and fines up to $8 million.

Thirty-six people were arrested on Wednesday in a crackdown on a drug trafficking ring that used Puerto Rico's main airport to smuggle large quantities of cocaine off the island aboard U.S.-bound passenger flights, authorities said.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said the 36 detainees, including 22 suspects rounded up at San Juan's International Airport, were among 45 people indicted for smuggling more than 61,000 pounds of cocaine out of the U.S. territory on commercial flights to the U.S. mainland since 1999.

"It's an important blow," said Laila Rico, a spokeswoman for the DEA's Caribbean Division, which is headquartered in Puerto Rico.

"The Puerto Rico airport is sought-after by drug dealers because it's basically a mid-point between South American countries and the United States and offers an easy entry point," Rico said.

She was referring to the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, the point from which the bulk of the drugs were flown to Miami and Orlando, in Florida, and Newark, New Jersey, aboard flights operated by American Airlines.

The DEA said in a statement that some suspects caught up in the drug bust were current or former American Airlines employees and airport personnel, who used a designated bathroom to hand over cocaine to couriers preparing to board U.S.-bound flights.

Cargo handlers on the payroll of the drug ring also worked to ensure that drug-laden suitcases were placed aboard U.S.-bound flights, the DEA said.

Exactly. Thank you! The lives of good people making bad decisions through desperation is the 'real' cost of the drug trade. It's a vicious and insidious trap that can do nothing but spiral inwards toward oblivion. Yet the lure of the 'quick fix' is far too tempting for many too many of your countrymen. The sad thing is that the RD does not have a monopoly on it and it's ravaging my country too as well as many others. Our collective governments don't seem to be able to do much more than scratch at the surface. The toll - measured in bodies - keeps in the plus column, and it's not just the indigent. Calculating and well healed opportunists join in the fray to make big sencillo dinero off of the backs of others. Perhaps the education advancement needs to begin with teaching our young about this.

Yet I still see some readers making jokes.

The only issue I have stem from YOUR constant glass half-empty position regarding DR's rise. This IS Dominican Today, not Jamaican Today.

The DR has made excellent progress in stabilizing its macro-economic position and is growing at a good clip far surpassing J. And with Haiti's leadership FINALLY about to enter a modernization and development track worthy of the name, DR stands to make even more progress as her economic uplift is partly tied to its western neighbor's economic expansion. So things are looking up in DR and YOUR CONSTANT Jamaican negativity towards the process is what's at issue between us.

another 5 to 10 years, and we will have pulled ahead. this comes from one of the most simple minded people i have ever encountered , in my life. the poor sould believes that economic growth is linear, and arithmetic, and everything is ceteris paribus. there are such things as cycles, Atabey. go and read some text. go read about a concept calle Creative Destruction, posited by Joseph Schumpeter. it helps to explain the changes in commodity prices, and explains, in part, the fall in the Jamaican economy, due to the fact that bauxite does not have the same strategic importance today that it had in the 1950s, and 60s. as i said,i waste my time arguing with simple minded creatures like you,.

Dready,

While the GDP PPP numbers aren't the end all of the discussion concerning the well being of the people of a nation, its growth over time reflects a changing and MORE sophisticated and prosperous economy and society. No one has ever said the the Dominican Republic does not have serious social problems to address. NO ONE. But if we are honest about things, and here you'll have to take your seat and have that Tall glass of Lemon Tea, the Dominican Republic IS demonstrating FINALLY a more mature posture that is driving her economy forward vis-a-vis J. And you of all people should acknowledge it and move on. DR was absolutely behind J some 40 years ago. DR has surpassed J in economic vitality growth for many years now. The gap is widening and little evidence of J getting close to the numbers of DR in the immediate future, say next 5 years. So a little more balance on your part. LOL

well, at least your heart is right about one subject...more education help for the DR. hopefully, it will happen, and the country will cease to produce illiterate, uneducated, uninformed, unevolved, primitive morons like you. by the way, do you really blive that anyone here thinks that you have anything sensible to say?

DR has surpassed J in economic vitality growth for many years now

it has also surpassed Jamaica by way of uneducated people, people below the poverty line, people in grave poverty, people with hunger and malnutrition issues, corruption, government waste of funds, no electricity, very little in the way of potable water, prehistoric sanitation, resulting in episodic epidemics, a primitive attempt at a civil service, a mail delivery system which takes almost 3 WEEKS to deliver an air mail letter from the USA. yes, you sure have surpassed J.
