Brussels.- European Council President Herman Van Rompuy today touted the progress in EU-Dominican Republic relations forged during president Leonel Fernandez’s two consecutive terms in office and said he’s confident of even further cooperation in the future.
Van Rompuy, in a joint press conference with the Dominican leader thanked him for "helping" to improve relations with Europe since he took office.
The Belgian politico said relations are now "excellent" as shown by the fact that the EU is Dominican Republic’s second biggest trading partner and the largest foreign investor.
The EU’s 27 member countries are also those which most support cooperation for development, according to Van Rompuy, who said that the EU is interested in the areas of trade, the warn on drug trafficking and in education.
Moreover the European Council President called Dominican Republic a "good example" of a country which has managed to cope with an adverse economic climate and continues to grow. "The biggest challenge now is to maintain that growth while fighting inequalities."

Selling your country bit by bit for sure the EU will hail its champion for their cause. That's what political leaders love to do --- decorate each other with trophy and prices. It makes it seen like hey Dominicans should be proud to have such a representative as their President. The true reality is place in the shadow like the high crime rate, widespread governmental corruption, lack of instructions for the youth, high unemployment and lack of opportunity for newly graduates of the various universities, and the failure to create jobs. these are but a few of the ills which are not being sought to solve. The folks who are away from their love one and sending them money while these scoundrel who sacrifice nothing parade around living the high life with sacrifices of others. This is what many of us Dominicans do here in the U.S., we give up part of our lives with sacrifices to support our love ones. How can anyone who is not a politician praise them. I will tell you the motto of the politician " many will have to live in poverty so that a few may live in splendid wealth " , and here is another motto " some must die in the incumbent so that others may live " . This is the last one " some must fight and die so their leaders can continued and survived ". At the end of the day when you support your local politician the next day you awake with all your problems plus one more.
