Santo Domingo.- Environment Ministry officials in Hato Mayor investigate the hunting of deer which date to 1958 when they’re imported for release by dictator Rafael Trujillo, as well as wild boars which date back to at least the Spanish conquest.

The deer have been sighted in the forests of Los Llanos, El Puerto, Palmarejo, El Prieto and Arroyón, in Los Haitises National Park’s buffer zone.

Livio Laureano Environment Ministry director in Hato Mayor, said an investigation aims to detain the poachers who slaughter the mammals in the forests and mountains of Los Haitises and sugar cane fields of San Jose de los Llanos and Bayaguana.

Farmer in the towns of Castellanos and Capote, over 30 kilometers west of Hato Mayor say there are many deer and have contacted the authorities to help stop the slaughter of the animals by hunters from the cities of Hato Mayor and Monte Plata.

Whitetail deer. There use to be a self sustaining heard in various areas and a was well maintained by some dedicated hunters and government officials......Until the PRD came around then it all went to hell.

Anyway.

A non-native species that should only be protected for Hunting purposes.
Proper game management can be quite lucrative as hunters are one of the highest spending tourist group there is.

Now this is the first I have heard of deer in the DR.........Now what is this all about ?

I am very surprised the slaughter did not start sooner and that these species have managed to go this far and survive that long.

Deers were initially brought by Ramfis trujillo, to breed some them...
There are very shy animals and avoid any contact with humans..

Wild board ..or puercos salvajes are being hunt in la cordillera central.
They are very evasive as well ,and hide in the forest.
Wealthy people from santiago are use to hunt them with shoot guns on the weekends as a hobbie..
