Santo Domingo.-  Police vehicles with automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) started 24-7 patrols on the busy Las Americas highway, covering a span from the international airport to greater Santo Domingo , to thwart assaults against travelers.

Police chief Jose Polanco ordered the measure after constant complaints that travelers were robbed of all types of belongings, including Jose Perez Matos, who travels frequently to the U.S. on business. "The situation has been controlled somewhat, one month ago you couldn’t travel, because when you take the vehicle to get to your house you were pursued by criminals who committed assaults upon arrivals."

Police Technology Systems Dept. Commander Julio Cesar Castillo said when the plate is called in, the ALPR immediately notifies if the vehicle has been used in crimes.

True....this month while in Las Americas airport not one police officer seen.....you would think they were all in the undercover role.

But on the highway from Dabajon, Monti Christi, Navarete and on to Santiago we counted 6 military check points of which I did not stop to avoid a shake-down.

Now, when you rent a car at the airport the cops can shake you down before you reach your destination.

And the problem when almost every car doesn't have a well displayed license plate.
How will they read those?
What will they do once they, if they do get a reading on a plate? Do they have an on-board computer data base with all listed plate number with expired and unregistered car, ones with previous offenses?
Sounds good... but most of us can look past the attempt a appeasing the masses to know that with out a on-board data base this is next to useless...First they need to enforce all the road rules including correctly displaying number plates and pull over and impound any cars without plate and all un-roadworthy vehicles ...

1. Build more jail facilities.
2. Sentence more years to those criminals.
3. Incentives for the Police to stop or catch the criminals.

riosm...yes I am glad you are confirming what is the normal situation at the airport and on las Americas...if you were to drive into Zona colonial it would be the same thing ZERO police presence It is no wonder the thieves feel they can operate safely and that everyone is barred up inside .
