Santiago.- The Santiago District three panel Court sentenced Jovanny Antonio Torres Genao to two years in prison and pay a fine of 20 minimum wages, for conviction on trafficking in precious wood.

Genao was caught dealing 50 mahogany logs totaling 800 feet in the community of Inoa, San Jose de Las Matas (central) on January 15, 2011, said Jacinto Mejia, head of the Santiago Office of the Environment Prosecutor.

In the statement, Mejia lauded the ruling as the first major sentence for a crime against the environment, which in his view sends a message to society.

Amaro noted that the timbering, trafficking or transport of mahogany logs or any other variety causes serious damage to the environment.

The term of incarceration should be equivalent to the amount of time that the particular variety of tree takes to get to maturity for legal harvest; If its 5 years, 10 or 20 etcetera!

Plus a fine prorated to the cost of replacement!

I didn’t see where it says it was on his own property; but even if it was he still needs to follow the environmental laws of the republic!

How much time should somebody get for lending $36,000,000 million US dollars to an International Drug Lord using Dominican Taxpayers money?

I think that we have a long way to go, but i have seen a little bit of change among the population, there is more awareness than before, people are starting to wake up and i say this because i saw it first hand... I hope that we as a country learn to respect the law and help one another, like Caamaño used to say UNIDAD, UNIDAD, si todos estamos unidos nada ni nadie prodra contra el bienestar de la republica.....

The reason why this person was successfully convicted is due to the location, San Jose de Las Matas. There is a true sense of community here, where natives really love and care about their town. Had it been at another location people could care less, look the other way and just keep going. Hurrah for Sajoma............!!!!

josean,

Yours is a clear an concise comment free of your normal purple labels and name calling. It was worth the second look.

There should be more arrests of this type to set the example the government is no longer going to turn a blind eye to criminal activity.

For once, I agree with you, Josean. Your statement makes sene and it's free of your usual rantings!
Here's hoping this isn't an isolated statement of lucidity.

It takes more than one person to chop down and transport a large tree. There's no question he's got help from buddies and a ready buyer. Investigate further and see who else is involved.
