Santo Domingo.- Relatives and friends of people affected by lead poisoning in the town of Haina on Monday began to protest to demand  that the Environment Ministry halt the recycling of batteries.

The protesters, interviewed by elcaribe.com.do, said dozens of children and the aged suffer respiratory ailments and some with permanent damage to their immune system, as a result of the recycling of batteries.

They especially cited the company Metalosa, which they affirm has caused the most damage in the area, operating for over 20 years in the slum Ciudad de Dios (City of God).

According to the Blacksmith Institute, the lead recycling turned the place into one of the world’s 10 most polluted sites, close behind Chernobyl.

They said the company Metalosa, associated with Meteoro batteries, dumped its lead waste on site.

The inhabitants of Barsequillo, Los Bajos de Haina, Piedra Blanca, and other sectors picketed outside the offices of Metalosa, chanting and carrying banners and candles, to call the attention of the Environment authorities.

I think this is a very worthwhile protest and the government must act ,,,,also the fumes from the sugar factory in la Romana give residents many respiratory problems ..especially those suffereing from the mildest asthma ..something needs to be done in both places

yes, you fool, I was hopping that you were going to say: it is due to the Metro (!)

Pollution is of great concern in Dom. Rep.
1. Gasoline with a very high level of octane
2. Diesel
3. Burned Motor-Oil
4. Not efficient combustion engines in the Sugar Cane Factories
5. Plastics
6. Black Waters
etc.

Yes, they can halt the recycling of the batteries. However, the need is to clean up the site and this gov't does not have the funds.

Contaminated earth will have to be removed, segregated, and disposed at a proper location. The cost of performing this would be in the millions of dollars. The actual cleanup cost does even regard the additional cost of protecting citizens from the hazards of lead released to the environment as a result of a cleanup measure.

A cleanup would involve international funding and assistance to include medical treatment to those souls affected by the lead.

Quote: "12 of those 20 years belong to Lie-onel Fernandez!"

Also, 4 years can be assigned to Balaguer and 4 years to Mejia. It was under Balaguer that Metalosa set up shop in Haina. But of course, he had an excuse, he was blind.

Who were the Senators and Deputies for Haina region during this time ?

Who was the head of El Ayuntamiento Municipal de Haina during this time ?

So Balaguer was blind and Hippo is a Burro, but Lie-onel Fernandez Is a Internationally Connected “Genius“ who I am sure understands the problem and at least could have begun some effort at a cleanup in 2004!

Does it really matter under which administration the problem started or continued...We must do something in that area of Haina and I have an idea that what zooma sys is correct ..it is going to be a big operation ,,but what about the two responsible companies ,,,they must contribute to the clean up

And what does one have to do with the other? Barrick's predecessor was the Dominican Government and Barrick has spent Millions of Dollars to clean up the mess the "Lovers of the Environment" did.

Falconbridge has been a pioneer in Natural Resource Corporate Social Responsibility.

What is stopping the immediate shut down of this sight? every signal cent spent on the clean up should come out of the pocket of the company that own it and even if they have to have all their assets taken and sold to pay for it. Then put the owners on the sight with shovels and barrows cleaning the mess they made...

I agree there should a clean up but meanwhile, the government should relocate these folks and setup barricades so that no one can live in or around the contaminated area.

Our corrupt leaders could care less as long as these companies pay them money. This should have never been allowed and any civilized government would do something about it.I do not expect much to come of this.Maybe they will relocate a few families but a cleanup is doubtful as that money could be better spent on more jeepetas, rum, and villas.

Josie "So Balaguer was blind"

Well you either was the one that was blind, not born at the time Balaguer was president or was not living in DR during the time Balaguer protected our environment. Mezquino the reason the DR has the largest ecosystem in Central America and the Caribbean was posible ONLY because of Balaguer. He is the reason why we did not became a dessert in the tropical like Haiti with his tough policy toward the environment. He was a visionary in that aspect and his record speak for itself. Go ahead with your slander you probably find around a few ignorant like yourself.

Its been like that for YEARS. How is that the Blacksmith Institute can bring attention to the issue YEARS ago, and yet the Government has STILL not done anything while those families rot away like that!?! All it takes it just a little bit of lead poisoning to PERMENANTLY damage the brain. The problem is that some of the leaders (like ol Leo) wants his Country to improve rapidly (as most of us do) but he wants to cut corners, take short cuts and not do his homework. Brand new hotels sitting on top of old and rotting plumbing. Brand new roads and highways and not neighborhood trash pickup etc etc. You dont become a powerful nation by faking it, you have to put in the leg work. I can only hope that the new President puts the PEOPLE first and not just run around trying to impress people by pretending to fix problems by buying something new and drawing the attention away from what is need to what is not. smh

I am amazed that living in Country as cultural and scientifically developed as Germany you still inthe DARK and have not matured to see things beyond, “if he against my Guy”, Lie-onel Fernandez, “the greatest human being to have ever walked the face of the earth,” he MUST be for the other Guy HIPPO.

It’s sad that the German government made a mistake in giving you the courtesy to enter into their country, since I am sure there is some poor soul somewhere in DR that could have made much better use that opportunity.

SPEEDY_GONZALEZ "vacano.. falcombridge was working in balaguer time.

Balaguer after taking office in 1966 forbid drastically the commercial use of tala and made it a state crime. Gave free stove to the poor and imported natural gas which the government subsidies to the poor so they leave behind the way they used to prepare their food. Balaguer pave the way at creating strict forestry laws that is still in place today but not enforce as he used to, a far cry from Balaguer's draconian anti-logging laws that were enforced by soldiers with machine guns. as he is remembered as the father of our ecology. Created the first national park and made our forests under the protection of the department of Agriculture.
